The market

What selling online in Seattle actually looks like

Seattle is the only US metro where marketplace strategy is a hometown subject. Amazon's presence has shaped the region's talent pool, its consumer-brand playbooks and its investor expectations, and a large share of local product companies started as marketplace sellers. Many are now working the other direction — building owned DTC to recover margin, capture customer data and stop being one algorithm change away from a bad quarter. That is a specific, technical migration problem, and it is more common here than anywhere else.

The category mix is distinctly Pacific Northwest. Specialty coffee is a genuine industry, with roasters clustered in Ballard, Fremont and Capitol Hill and a subscription model that fits the product perfectly. Outdoor and technical apparel is a major regional category with deep supply-chain roots. Gaming, collectibles and hobby brands have real density thanks to the local studio and publisher base. And South Lake Union and Bellevue supply an unusually engineering-literate buyer — Seattle founders are more likely than most to ask about the storefront API, Core Web Vitals and headless architecture in the first call.

Verticals

Who we build for in Seattle

The categories that dominate Seattle’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Specialty coffee & tea

Roast-date freshness, grind variants and subscription cadence are what make coffee one of the strongest DTC categories on Shopify.

02

Outdoor & technical apparel

Layering guidance, materials content and fit data close sales that a spec-free product page loses.

03

Marketplace sellers going direct

Migrating listings, reviews, content and customer relationships to an owned store is a project, not a plugin.

04

Gaming & collectibles

Pre-orders, allocation, limited runs and release-date logic need real inventory mechanics behind the storefront.

05

Consumer tech & accessories

Compatibility matrices and comparison tools do the selling in a category where buyers arrive already researching.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Seattle brands

Owned-revenue share as the headline metric

We track the percentage of revenue coming from channels you control, and we work that number up deliberately quarter over quarter.

Migration off marketplace without losing content

Product content, imagery, reviews and search equity all need to move deliberately. Rebuilding listings from scratch is how brands lose a year of trust signals.

Real performance engineering

Core Web Vitals, script budgets and honest headless assessment. If Hydrogen is not worth its cost for you, we will say so instead of selling it.

What brands here have said

Anonymised at their request — role, category and size only.

+58% organic revenue YoY

“Honestly I signed for the SEO and the AI-search piece was a footnote in the proposal I skimmed. Then in March our product pages started getting quoted in ChatGPT answers for insulated growler queries, and that traffic showed up in GA4 with real purchase intent attached to it. Organic revenue is up 58% year over year and roughly a fifth of that comes from surfaces that didn't exist when we signed the contract. I still don't fully understand it. I've stopped questioning it.”

FAQ

Working with us from Seattle

No. ConversionEX is headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we serve Seattle clients remotely with travel for kickoffs and quarterly reviews. Mountain time gives us a one-hour offset, so we overlap your whole working day.

Yes, but not as a mirror of your listings. A direct channel earns its place through margin, customer data, bundles and subscription offers you cannot run on a marketplace, and better product content than a listing template allows. The goal is not replacing marketplace revenue — it is owning a growing share of total revenue and the customer relationship inside it.

Some of it, depending on source and platform terms. Reviews collected through a third-party provider can typically be migrated; marketplace reviews generally cannot. The practical answer is to start collecting owned reviews immediately through a Shopify-integrated provider so the asset builds from day one rather than after launch.

Only for a real reason: content-and-commerce complexity, a performance ceiling a Liquid theme genuinely cannot reach, or an existing front-end engineering team who will own it. Headless adds material build cost and permanent maintenance. For most brands a well-engineered Online Store 2.0 theme hits the same Core Web Vitals numbers for far less money.

Cadence matched to consumption, easy skip and swap, roast and grind flexibility without a cancel-and-resubscribe, and a gifting path that does not create an accidental recurring charge. Then flows around the second and third renewals, which is where the majority of subscription churn happens across every consumable category.
