Shopify Agency in Istanbul for Brands Exporting to the West

A Shopify store is not how you beat Trendyol at home. It is how an Istanbul manufacturer sells directly to a customer in Denver or Düsseldorf, in her currency, with the duty already paid.

Istanbul is nine hours ahead of us for most of the year and ten during the North American winter, since Türkiye stopped changing its clocks in 2016. That leaves a narrow live window — your late afternoon and early evening, roughly 16:00 to 19:00, is our morning — so calls are scheduled there deliberately and the rest of the work moves by written handover you read at the start of your day.

The market

What selling online in Istanbul actually looks like

Istanbul is the trading floor for one of the world's most complete consumer manufacturing bases. Merter and Osmanbey are the apparel wholesale engines, Laleli has run export trade toward the Balkans, Russia and Central Asia for decades, Zeytinburnu holds textile and leather production, the İkitelli industrial estates cover printing, packaging and light manufacturing, and the jewellery trade concentrates around the Grand Bazaar and the purpose-built Kuyumcukent complex. An hour or four outside the city, the supply chain continues: Bursa for textiles, Denizli for towels and bedlinen, Gaziantep for rugs and carpets. Istanbul Airport ranks among the largest air cargo hubs in the region, which is why an express parcel leaving Zeytinburnu on Monday can reasonably be on a doorstep in Chicago or Cologne by the end of the week.

The commercial position is genuinely unusual. Türkiye has been inside a customs union with the EU for industrial goods since 1996, so apparel, textiles and leather move into European markets without the tariff burden an Asian supplier carries, on a truck or a plane rather than a five-week ocean route. Micro-exports leave through a simplified electronic customs declaration handled by the express carriers, which makes small parcel volume administratively realistic for a company that has never exported outside a container. And because production costs sit in lira while export revenue sits in dollars and euros, a working direct channel does something no wholesale contract does: it decouples a share of your income from currency volatility. What is missing, almost universally, is the storefront that a foreign buyer will actually trust.

Verticals

Who we build for in Istanbul

The categories that dominate Istanbul’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Apparel & knitwear

Factory-direct quality is the whole story, and it only lands if sizing converts to US and UK measurements with real garment dimensions on the page.

02

Home textiles — towels & bedlinen

Weight, weave, cotton origin and care detail are what a European buyer compares, and Shopify's metafields turn that into filterable, structured content.

03

Leather goods & footwear

High order values justify made-to-order and personalisation, but they also demand a returns route a foreign buyer believes in before checkout.

04

Cosmetics & personal care

Selling into the EU means a Responsible Person and product notification before launch, not after — the storefront is the easy half of that project.

05

Jewellery & gold

Insured shipping, hallmark and materials transparency, and precious-metal import rules per destination all have to be resolved in shipping profiles.

What we do differently for Istanbul brands

Written for the buyer, not translated for her

English product content written as English, with US measurements, familiar category language and search terms an American or German shopper actually types. Machine translation is visible within two sentences, and visible translation costs trust before it costs conversions.

Landed cost settled before checkout

Duties and import tax calculated and collected at the point of sale, DDP where it makes sense, IOSS for low-value EU consignments. A courier asking for money at the door produces a refusal, a return leg and a chargeback — three costs from one configuration gap.

Trust engineered into the page

Workshop and production photography, real measurements, named delivery windows, a returns process with an address behind it, reviews with photos and a support window stated in the customer's timezone. This is the specific work of selling from an unfamiliar country.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Istanbul

No. ConversionEX works from one office, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we serve Istanbul clients remotely. We have no Turkish entity and no staff in the city, and we are not going to imply otherwise. What we do have is a working day that overlaps with your afternoon and a written process built for exactly that.

Not to replace it. Trendyol is where Turkish shoppers already are, and fighting that is a bad use of money. Shopify is for the customer in the US, Germany or the UK who will never open a Turkish marketplace app, and who buys at a retail price rather than a wholesale one. The two channels serve different buyers, and only one of them leaves you owning the customer relationship and the email list.

This is the first thing to settle, before any design work starts. Shopify Payments is not available to merchants domiciled in Türkiye, so settlement runs through third-party gateways, PayPal, or a foreign entity depending on how the business is structured. Each route has different fees, payout timing and checkout appearance, and the choice affects what the checkout looks like to your buyer — which makes it a conversion decision, not only a finance one.

Whoever you decide, and deciding badly is expensive. For EU orders under the low-value threshold, IOSS lets you collect VAT at checkout so nothing is demanded on delivery. For the US, the low-value de minimis exemption has been closed, so small parcels now carry duty they did not a few years ago and DDP has gone from a nice touch to close to mandatory. We configure duty collection, HS codes and commercial invoice generation so the price your customer sees is the price she pays.

Regularly, once the page removes the reasons not to. In practice that means measurements she can check against a garment she already owns, a delivery date rather than a shipping-time range, a returns policy written in plain English with a real route back, photography that shows the workshop as well as the product, and reviews from buyers in her own market. Country of origin is rarely the objection. Uncertainty is.
