Shopify Agency in Berlin, Germany

German ecommerce has rules — legal ones and behavioural ones — and a theme built for a US brand breaks both quietly. We build Berlin stores that pass both tests and then sell across the border.

Berlin is eight hours ahead of Mountain Time, so we share about two hours of the working day — your late afternoon, our early morning. Recurring calls sit in that window, everything else runs in writing, and work briefed at the end of your day is typically back with you by the following morning.

The market

What selling online in Berlin actually looks like

Berlin became Germany's consumer-brand city for unglamorous reasons: space was cheap for a long time, the talent pool that grew up around the first wave of ecommerce companies stayed, and the logistics belt along the A10 in Brandenburg — Grossbeeren, Ludwigsfelde and the corridor out towards Schönefeld — put serious warehousing within an hour of the city without city rents. Germany is the largest ecommerce market in the EU by consumer spend, DHL's Packstation network has made parcel-locker delivery a normal expectation rather than a novelty, and the domestic customer base is big enough that a good brand can reach real scale without ever crossing a border. That last fact is why so many German brands leave cross-border revenue on the table for years.

The category mix in Berlin is unlike the rest of Germany. Electronic music gave the city a genuine hardware and pro-audio industry, with instrument, synth and studio-equipment makers alongside labels and pressing plants. Specialty coffee roasting is a real trade here, concentrated around Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Prenzlauer Berg. Cycling and cargo bikes are a serious commercial category in a city that rides year-round. Natural cosmetics and organic food have a depth of demand that surprises brands from elsewhere. Independent fashion and streetwear labels work out of Mitte and Friedrichshain, and the tabletop and hobby trade is stronger in Germany than in any other European market. These are categories with specification-heavy products, dealer relationships and international buyers — which is exactly where a well-built Shopify store beats a catalogue and an email address.

Verticals

Who we build for in Berlin

The categories that dominate Berlin’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Music hardware & pro audio

Spec tables, compatibility data and firmware documentation belong in structured metafields, and Shopify B2B handles the dealer pricing behind the same catalogue.

02

Natural cosmetics & organic food

Ingredient listings and the unit pricing German price-indication rules require can be generated from product data rather than typed into every description.

03

Bicycles & cargo bikes

High order values need instalment payment, freight-rated shipping and a build-configurator that does not fall apart at checkout.

04

Independent fashion & streetwear

Drops, invoice payment and a returns rate that has to be designed against rather than apologised for.

05

Tabletop games & hobby

Pre-orders, allocation and multi-language editions are inventory problems first, and Shopify handles them properly when the variant model is built for it.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Berlin brands

Legal furniture built into the theme

Impressum, withdrawal instructions, unit pricing and an order button that states the payment obligation — implemented in the template so they stay correct as the catalogue changes, not pasted into a page once.

A payment mix that matches the market

Invoice, direct debit, PayPal and cards, ordered and presented for a German buyer rather than an American one. Reordering the wallet is half a day of work that routinely beats a quarter of creative testing.

Tracking that survives consent

Consent Mode, server-side events and a measurement setup that still produces defensible numbers after a strict cookie banner. Analytics you cannot trust is worse than no analytics.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Berlin

No. ConversionEX is in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we work with German clients remotely. We are not going to invent a Mitte address. Berlin is eight hours ahead of us, which gives a genuine but short overlap in your late afternoon, and we travel for kickoffs and quarterly planning when the engagement warrants it.

For cross-border selling, often yes — if you are the foreign brand in Spain or Poland, an English storefront with correct pricing and duties is a reasonable starting point. For selling to German consumers it is not enough, because German buyers expect German copy, German legal pages and German customer service. Shopify Markets and Translate & Adapt let you run a German market and an international English market from one catalogue with proper hreflang.

If you ship goods to German consumers you need to be registered under the packaging law and licensed with a dual system before your first order, and several product categories carry their own producer-responsibility obligations across the EU. That is legal and accounting work rather than agency work. What we do is make sure the storefront reflects it — correct labelling data, unit pricing, and shipping rules that do not send you into markets you are not registered for.

Treat it as an export market, because it is one — outside the EU customs union and outside EU VAT. That means customs paperwork, Swiss VAT rules once you cross the registration threshold, pricing in Swiss francs, and a decision about whether you deliver duty-paid. Delivering DDP costs more but removes the surprise carrier invoice that turns a Swiss customer into a refund. We configure it as its own Shopify market rather than as a shipping zone bolted onto the EU.

Once your cross-border B2C sales into other EU countries pass the EU-wide threshold, you charge the buyer's country VAT rate and file through the One Stop Shop instead of registering in each member state. The store side is straightforward — correct rates per country, tax-inclusive display, invoices that match. The filing side belongs to your Steuerberater, and we will coordinate with them rather than pretend to replace them.
