Why Denver brands come to us for this

  • Pre-book seasons and at-once reorders on one Shopify B2B catalogue, one login for the shop buyer.
  • Shopify Functions for pro-deal tiers, ambassador pricing and case-pack volume breaks — no discount-code archaeology.
  • Checkout UI extensions for warranty registration, repair-plan attach and oversized-freight choice at the point of purchase.
  • Freight logic that reflects real Colorado shipping economics for skis, bikes, boards and 3-metre packages.
  • Honest Hydrogen assessment: we build headless for editorial-heavy gear brands and talk everyone else out of it.

Colorado gear companies hit the ceiling of a standard theme earlier than most, and for a specific reason: they run three commercial models on one catalogue. Full-price DTC, specialty wholesale with pre-book and at-once seasons, and some combination of athlete, ambassador or shop pro-deal pricing. Standard Shopify makes you fake at least one of those with discount codes and a spreadsheet.

Plus is where that stops. Company profiles for every independent shop from Boulder to Steamboat, per-account price lists, quantity commitments against future ship dates, and net terms that do not require anyone in accounts receivable to chase a PDF. Shopify Functions handle the pricing rules that used to be three stacked apps — volume breaks on case-pack hardgoods, tiered pro-deal discounts, freight thresholds that reflect what a 200cm ski bag actually costs to move.

Headless is a separate conversation and usually a shorter one. Hydrogen earns its budget when you have a genuine content-and-commerce problem — trail guides, fit finders, route or size configurators, a deep editorial library feeding product — which is more common in this market than most. It does not earn it because a competitor announced theirs at a trade show. We model both and tell you which one the numbers support.

Local context

Pre-book, at-once and the specialty retail calendar

Specialty retail in the Mountain West still buys on a pre-book rhythm: shops commit to next winter's order months ahead, then place at-once fill-in orders once the snow actually arrives and they know what is selling in Vail, Winter Park or Crested Butte. Most Denver brands run those two motions in two different systems, which is why their inventory disagrees with itself by December. On Shopify Plus B2B they live on one catalogue — pre-book as a gated seasonal catalogue with future ship dates and quantity commitments, at-once running against live inventory, and one login for the retailer. That single consolidation removes more manual work from a Colorado brand's ops team than any storefront change we could ship.

Full service detail
01

Checkout Extensibility Build

Checkout UI extensions for trust content, delivery choice, gifting and post-purchase upsell. Native, upgrade-safe, and no longer dependent on checkout.liquid.

02

Shopify Functions

Custom discount, delivery and payment-method logic written as Functions. Volume tiers, bundle pricing and B2B rules run server-side instead of via three stacked apps.

03

B2B on Shopify

Company profiles, price lists, payment terms, quantity rules and a self-serve reorder portal. Wholesale and DTC on one catalogue, one inventory, one admin.

04

Shopify Markets & Localisation

Multi-currency, multi-language, market-specific catalogues, domain routing and correct hreflang. Expansion without a store-per-country sprawl.

05

Headless Hydrogen Storefront

Hydrogen on Oxygen with the Storefront API, edge caching and streaming SSR. We build this only when the performance or content case is real, and we say so when it isn't.

06

ERP, PIM & 3PL Integration

NetSuite, Business Central, Akeneo or a 3PL wired in through a documented middleware layer with retry logic, error alerting and a reconciliation report.

Scoped and quoted for your Denver store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Denver engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Technical Discovery

We map your systems, order flows and edge cases end to end, then document where data breaks today. Output is an architecture diagram you can hand to any engineer.

02

Solution Design

Native-versus-custom decision for every requirement, with cost and maintenance load attached. Plenty of requests get answered with a $0 native setting.

03

Build in Sprints

Two-week sprints in a dev store with a staged demo at the end of each. You see working software every fortnight, not a status deck.

04

Load & Failure Testing

Peak-traffic simulation, payment-failure paths, partial-sync recovery and a rollback plan. We break it in staging so BFCM doesn't break it live.

05

Launch & Enablement

Phased rollout, monitoring dashboards and training for ops and finance. Every custom component ships with a README and a named owner.

Supplements (Subscription DTC)

~$4.2M/yr, 60% subscription revenue, 22 SKUs, US · Shopify Plus (Recharge, Klaviyo)

Monthly subscription churn hit 9.4% and the cancel flow was a single button on a hosted page nobody had touched in three years. Support processed 340 subscription changes a month by hand because customers could not do it themselves. The named constraint: no forced logins. The brand refused to gate account access behind a password reset, which ruled out every off-the-shelf portal.

Home Goods & Furniture

~$11M/yr, 2,300 SKUs, configurable upholstery, US · Shopify Plus + Hydrogen storefront (Oxygen)

Fabric, leg and size options turned 2,300 SKUs into more than 40,000 variant permutations, and the Liquid theme rendered a configurable PDP in 6.9 seconds on mobile. Collection filtering ran client-side, so 40% of shoppers left before the first product painted. The named constraint: the ERP stayed. It was the single source of truth for stock and lead times and was not up for replacement.

Clients on this work

Reorder time 20 min → 3 min

“We sell wholesale into about 400 accounts and were still taking reorders by email like it was 2009. They built the B2B catalog on Shopify with net-30 terms and per-account price lists, and moved our whole rep team onto it in one week. Average reorder went from roughly 20 minutes of back-and-forth to under three.”

LCP 4.1s → 1.3s

“A Hydrogen build plus a NetSuite sync that our own team had failed at twice. Inventory finally matches between the warehouse and the storefront, which sounds boring and is the most valuable thing anyone has done for us this year. LCP went from 4.1s to 1.3s. The honest part: the first six weeks felt slow and I genuinely wasn't sure we'd picked right — it only clicked once we moved to a standing Thursday call with the engineers instead of account-manager summaries.”

FAQ

Plus & Headless in Denver — your questions

Yes. Pre-book runs as a gated catalogue with future ship dates and committed quantities, priced from a company-specific price list, while at-once ordering runs against live stock in the same store. Retailers see both under one login. What Shopify does not do natively is complex allocation across oversubscribed pre-book — where that matters we handle it with Functions or an inventory system integration rather than pretending it is native.

Plenty of Denver brands are on Plus and using roughly a fifth of it. Checkout extensibility, B2B and Functions at scale genuinely require it. Markets and headless do not. In discovery we list what you would actually switch on against the fee, and if the honest answer is that standard Shopify plus better configuration covers you, we will say so before you renew.

Sometimes, more often than in other categories. Gear brands frequently carry a real editorial layer — technique guides, athlete content, materials explainers — that has to interleave with product, and that is one of the few cases where headless earns its permanent maintenance cost. If your content is a blog nobody updates, a well-engineered Online Store 2.0 theme hits the same Core Web Vitals for far less money.

With custom delivery logic rather than a flat rate someone guessed at in 2021. Dimensional weight, freight class and zone drive the rate, and the buyer sees an honest number early instead of at the final step. From Denver this matters more than it does on a coast — long ground transit distances to both population centres mean an inaccurate freight estimate is either eating your margin or abandoning your cart.

Usually not. A well-built Liquid theme hits sub-2s LCP and costs a fraction to run. Headless earns its keep when you need a custom front-end framework, a heavy CMS-driven content layer, or interactive product configuration Liquid cannot serve. We will talk you out of it if the numbers don't hold.

No. Shopify has retired it in favour of checkout extensibility, and anything still running on it is on borrowed time. We migrate custom checkout logic into checkout UI extensions and Functions, which survive platform upgrades instead of blocking them.

For most mid-market brands, yes. Company accounts, per-company price lists, net payment terms and quantity rules cover the majority of wholesale workflows natively. Where it falls short is complex quoting and contract pricing, which we handle with Functions or a light custom app.
