Shopify Plus & Headless Commerce in Kansas City, MO

B2B accounts, freight-aware delivery rules and checkout logic for Kansas City brands where wholesale is already half the business.

Delivered remotely for brands across Kansas City and Missouri.

Scale · Kansas City

Why Kansas City brands come to us for this

  • B2B on Shopify for grocery, clinic and distributor accounts: company profiles, price lists, net terms, reorder portal
  • Shopify Functions carrying case-pack quantity rules and weight-break delivery logic instead of stacked discount apps
  • Checkout extensions capturing purchase order numbers, dock hours and delivery appointment windows
  • Correct tax treatment for accounts on both the Missouri and Kansas sides of the state line
  • Hydrogen only where a real configurator or content library justifies the ongoing engineering cost

In most cities a brand reaches Shopify Plus because direct-to-consumer volume outgrew the plan. In Kansas City it is more often because wholesale did. A sauce maker gets into a regional grocery chain, a pet supplement brand starts selling to veterinary clinics along the Animal Health Corridor, an industrial supplier realises its phone-and-fax reorder desk is the bottleneck. Plus becomes worth it the day company accounts, price lists and net terms stop being a spreadsheet.

The engineering that earns its keep here is unglamorous. Shopify Functions carrying weight-break delivery logic so a pallet order and a six-bottle order do not use the same rate table. Volume tier pricing applied server-side instead of stacked across three discount apps that disagree with each other. Checkout UI extensions asking a wholesale buyer for a purchase order number and a delivery appointment window, which is exactly how freight actually gets booked out of this metro.

Headless is a separate conversation and usually a shorter one. A well-built Liquid theme, sitting behind Shopify's CDN, serves a Kansas City catalogue faster than most Hydrogen projects we are asked to rescue. We will argue you out of headless unless there is a real content or configuration layer behind it — a distributor with a genuine product configurator, or a brand running a deep recipe and technical library that Liquid templating genuinely constrains.

Local context

Wholesale here is freight-shaped, not cart-shaped

A Kansas City wholesale order is rarely a bigger version of a consumer order. It is case packs, a freight class, a dock with receiving hours, a purchase order number and often a delivery appointment. Because the metro sits where CPKC's US operations and four interstates meet, and because the Edgerton intermodal park pulled a warehouse belt into southern Johnson County, a serious share of local buyers are themselves logistics operators who expect the ordering experience to speak their language. So the Plus work we do here bends toward that: quantity rules built on case packs rather than units, LTL and freight-quote handoff from the cart instead of a fake parcel rate, tax logic that behaves correctly for accounts split across the Missouri and Kansas sides of the state line, and reorder history that lets a buyer repeat last quarter in two clicks. Get that right and the phone desk stops being your growth ceiling.

06

ERP, PIM & 3PL Integration

NetSuite, Business Central, Akeneo or a 3PL wired in through a documented middleware layer with retry logic, error alerting and a reconciliation report.

Scoped and quoted for your Kansas City store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Kansas City engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Technical Discovery

We map your systems, order flows and edge cases end to end, then document where data breaks today. Output is an architecture diagram you can hand to any engineer.

02

Solution Design

Native-versus-custom decision for every requirement, with cost and maintenance load attached. Plenty of requests get answered with a $0 native setting.

03

Build in Sprints

Two-week sprints in a dev store with a staged demo at the end of each. You see working software every fortnight, not a status deck.

04

Load & Failure Testing

Peak-traffic simulation, payment-failure paths, partial-sync recovery and a rollback plan. We break it in staging so BFCM doesn't break it live.

05

Launch & Enablement

Phased rollout, monitoring dashboards and training for ops and finance. Every custom component ships with a README and a named owner.

Supplements (Subscription DTC)

~$4.2M/yr, 60% subscription revenue, 22 SKUs, US · Shopify Plus (Recharge, Klaviyo)

Monthly subscription churn hit 9.4% and the cancel flow was a single button on a hosted page nobody had touched in three years. Support processed 340 subscription changes a month by hand because customers could not do it themselves. The named constraint: no forced logins. The brand refused to gate account access behind a password reset, which ruled out every off-the-shelf portal.

Home Goods & Furniture

~$11M/yr, 2,300 SKUs, configurable upholstery, US · Shopify Plus + Hydrogen storefront (Oxygen)

Fabric, leg and size options turned 2,300 SKUs into more than 40,000 variant permutations, and the Liquid theme rendered a configurable PDP in 6.9 seconds on mobile. Collection filtering ran client-side, so 40% of shoppers left before the first product painted. The named constraint: the ERP stayed. It was the single source of truth for stock and lead times and was not up for replacement.

Clients on this work

Reorder time 20 min → 3 min

“We sell wholesale into about 400 accounts and were still taking reorders by email like it was 2009. They built the B2B catalog on Shopify with net-30 terms and per-account price lists, and moved our whole rep team onto it in one week. Average reorder went from roughly 20 minutes of back-and-forth to under three.”

LCP 4.1s → 1.3s

“A Hydrogen build plus a NetSuite sync that our own team had failed at twice. Inventory finally matches between the warehouse and the storefront, which sounds boring and is the most valuable thing anyone has done for us this year. LCP went from 4.1s to 1.3s. The honest part: the first six weeks felt slow and I genuinely wasn't sure we'd picked right — it only clicked once we moved to a standing Thursday call with the engineers instead of account-manager summaries.”

FAQ

Plus & Headless in Kansas City — your questions

Partly, and being honest about the boundary matters. For predictable case-pack orders we can carry real weight and dimensional data into rated LTL quoting. For irregular or oversized consignments we build a quote-request path that captures the dock, the appointment window and the accessorial requirements, then routes it to your traffic desk. Pretending a parcel rate covers a pallet is how a margin disappears.

Yes. The clinic and dealer catalogue sits behind a gated B2B experience with its own price lists, minimum quantities and terms, while the consumer store stays open on the same inventory. Professional-only SKUs are hidden from the public catalogue entirely rather than merely unlinked, which is the mistake we usually find when we inherit one of these builds.

It causes real problems in configuration, not at the moment of checkout. Two states means two sets of rules for registration, remote-seller obligations, taxability of some grocery and supplement categories, and exemption certificates for wholesale accounts. We wire your tax engine and customer exemption handling to reflect that, and we work with your accountant on where you actually have obligations rather than guessing.

A documented middleware layer rather than a direct point-to-point script. Orders, inventory, customers and pricing move on defined schedules with retry logic and alerting when a message fails, plus a daily reconciliation report so a silent mismatch surfaces the next morning instead of at month end. We test against real orders in staging before anything touches production.

Usually not. A well-built Liquid theme hits sub-2s LCP and costs a fraction to run. Headless earns its keep when you need a custom front-end framework, a heavy CMS-driven content layer, or interactive product configuration Liquid cannot serve. We will talk you out of it if the numbers don't hold.

No. Shopify has retired it in favour of checkout extensibility, and anything still running on it is on borrowed time. We migrate custom checkout logic into checkout UI extensions and Functions, which survive platform upgrades instead of blocking them.

For most mid-market brands, yes. Company accounts, per-company price lists, net payment terms and quantity rules cover the majority of wholesale workflows natively. Where it falls short is complex quoting and contract pricing, which we handle with Functions or a light custom app.
