Shopify Agency for Sydney Brands

Free shipping is easy in a small country. We build Sydney stores where the freight maths, the peak season and the retention programme all account for the continent you are actually shipping across.

Sydney is about seventeen hours ahead of Albuquerque, which is a genuine gap and we will not dress it up as an advantage. Live calls happen early in your morning, which is late afternoon of our previous day, and the rest runs asynchronously — expect roughly one round-trip a day on questions, so we write briefs and decisions in more detail than we would for a client three hours away.

The market

What selling online in Sydney actually looks like

Sydney's consumer-product economy runs on a belt of industrial and creative suburbs rather than the CBD. Alexandria, Rosebery and Waterloo are where the warehouse-plus-showroom DTC businesses sit — brands that started with a spare room and now hold pallets. Marrickville and St Peters carry light manufacturing, brewing and food production. Surry Hills and Chippendale hold the studios, photographers and agencies those brands buy from. Port Botany is the state's container gateway, and Sydney Markets at Flemington is the largest fresh produce market in the country. Parramatta and the western suburbs are increasingly where the fulfilment and distribution actually happens, because that is where floor space still exists.

The categories are shaped by climate and by distance. Swimwear, activewear and resort apparel are genuinely world-class here and sell northern-hemisphere seasons in reverse. Skincare and sun care are a serious local category with real formulation and TGA compliance requirements. Homewares, linen and outdoor living do enormous volume. Coffee, natural wine and specialty food have a deep independent base. And almost every one of these brands eventually faces the same question: whether to chase the domestic market of 27 million harder, or to open a US and UK market on the same store — which is a Shopify Markets, freight and customer-service decision long before it is a marketing one.

10% GSTapplies to almost everything, and to imported goods sold to Australian consumers as well
A$75,000annual turnover at which GST registration becomes mandatory — a threshold most growing stores cross mid-year
Summer Christmaspeak is swim, outdoor and gifting at once, and Boxing Day is a bigger single day than Black Friday for many local brands

Verticals

Who we build for in Sydney

The categories that dominate Sydney’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Swimwear & resortwear

Fit, size charts and lookbook merchandising carry the sale, and Shopify's variant and metafield tooling handles a size run that changes by style.

02

Activewear & performance apparel

High return rates make fit guidance, review filtering by body type and a frictionless exchange flow worth more than another ad dollar.

03

Skincare & sun care

Regimen bundling and replenishment subscriptions fit the repurchase cycle, and claims content has to be built to survive compliance review.

04

Homewares, linen & outdoor living

Bulky, zone-priced freight is the whole commercial problem — it belongs in shipping profiles and on the product page, not in a surprise at checkout.

05

Specialty coffee & independent food

Roast dates, grind variants and subscription cadence make this one of the most durable recurring-revenue categories on Shopify.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Sydney brands

Freight priced by zone, not by hope

A flat national shipping rate is a subsidy to your most expensive customers. We build rate tables that reflect what it really costs to reach WA, the NT and regional NSW, then set free-shipping thresholds that hold margin.

A peak plan that starts in September

Boxing Day through January is too concentrated to improvise. Storefront, offers, stock logic and email are built and tested in the shoulder months, because nothing gets fixed properly in the middle of it.

Buy-now-pay-later done deliberately

BNPL is a normal expectation for Australian shoppers and it changes AOV, returns and margin at the same time. We put it in the right places on the page and measure what it actually does to contribution, not just conversion rate.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Sydney

No. ConversionEX is in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we work with Australian brands remotely. We have no NSW entity and no local staff, and we are not going to pretend the time difference does not exist — see how we actually run it below.

By pricing it honestly. Set the threshold from your real blended freight cost and average basket rather than copying a competitor, split rates by zone so remote deliveries are not funded by Sydney orders, and use the threshold as a merchandising tool with a progress indicator in the cart. Brands that offer free shipping everywhere usually discover the cost sitting in their gross margin a year later.

Pricing in USD as its own market with its own rounding, a US shipping story with realistic transit times, duties and taxes handled at checkout, size and spelling localisation, and a support window that overlaps American hours. The technical setup takes weeks. The harder part is deciding whether you can serve a US customer well before you spend on acquiring one.

Most brands end up with both. Australia Post gives you reach into regional and remote addresses that couriers price painfully, while couriers give you better metro speed and tracking. The right answer shows up in your shipping profiles as carrier choice by zone and weight, and it should be reviewed at least annually as your weight profile changes.

Backwards from the last safe landing date, not forwards from a marketing calendar. A container that misses its window is a cancelled peak, so the pre-order and backorder mechanics have to exist before the season: honest ship-by dates on the product page, deposits where the order value justifies them, and a waitlist that fires the day stock clears. It also decides your discount plan. Brands sitting on stock in mid-January are usually discounting because they had no other lever left, not because they meant to.
