Analytics, Tracking & Data in Sydney

Tracking and reporting for Sydney stores where GST, currency and zone freight all have to come out of the number before anyone calls a channel profitable.

Delivered remotely for brands across Sydney and Australia.

Scale · Sydney

Why Sydney brands come to us for this

  • Shopify, GA4 and ad account time zones aligned first, because misaligned days are the most common reason nothing reconciles
  • GST handled explicitly in reported revenue so ROAS is not flattered by 10% of tax you never keep
  • Freight cost by delivery zone built into contribution reporting, exposing the orders that lose money after shipping
  • BNPL merchant fees, payment costs and returns modelled as cost lines rather than left out of channel profitability
  • Consent and privacy configuration set per market — Australian obligations domestically, GDPR-grade handling for EU and UK traffic

Australian ecommerce reporting has three quiet distortions that inflate performance, and most stores have all three. The first is GST: revenue reported inclusive of 10% tax makes every ROAS look 10% better than it is, and if Shopify and GA4 disagree about whether tax is included, the two systems will never reconcile. The second is currency, which arrives the moment Shopify Markets is switched on and USD orders start appearing in an AUD store — with ad platforms reporting in yet another currency and a conversion rate applied at some point nobody documented. The third is freight, which in this country is large enough to invert a channel's profitability entirely.

That third one is the whole ballgame for a Sydney brand. A campaign delivering a strong ROAS to a metro audience and a weak one to regional and remote addresses is not a single number, and averaging them hides the fact that some orders lose money on freight alone. We build cost of delivery by zone into the reporting layer alongside cost of goods, payment fees including BNPL merchant costs, and returns — so the number your team argues about is contribution, not revenue.

Underneath that sits the ordinary but non-negotiable work: a GA4 event schema that matches how your store actually behaves, server-side tracking that survives browser restrictions, Conversions API with properly normalised parameters, and a reconciliation between Shopify, GA4 and the ad platforms with the expected variance documented so nobody spends a Monday chasing a discrepancy that was always going to exist.

Local context

Time zones break reports before anything else does

The first thing we check in an inherited Australian account is what time zone each system thinks it is in, because it is wrong more often than not. Shopify reports in the store's time zone, GA4 reports in the property's, and ad platforms report in the account's — and when those are set to different regions, a day of Australian sales gets split across two reporting days and nothing ever ties out. It is a fifteen-minute fix that saves an argument every month. The related trap is our own working pattern: our day is your night, so any dashboard that quotes 'yesterday' needs an explicit time zone stamped on it or two teams end up looking at different data while using identical words. Australian privacy obligations under the Privacy Act and the APPs also differ from the GDPR regime, which matters if you are running a market into the EU or UK — consent-mode signalling that is optional domestically becomes necessary for that traffic, and we configure it by market rather than switching a banner on for everybody.

What Analytics & Data includes

The same standard of work we run for every client — applied to a Sydney brand’s realities.

Full service detail
01

Tracking Audit & Reconciliation

A full event inventory across GA4, Meta, Google Ads, Klaviyo and Shopify, reconciled against order data to quantify exactly where and how much data is lost.

02

Server-Side Tracking

Server-side GTM on a first-party subdomain, resilient to ad blockers and ITP, with deduplication between browser and server events done properly.

03

Conversions API Integration

Meta CAPI, Google Enhanced Conversions and TikTok Events API with hashed identifiers, targeting event match quality of 8 or above.

04

GA4 Event Schema

A documented, consistent eCommerce event and parameter specification across every surface, so reports mean the same thing in six months as they do today.

05

Consent Mode & Privacy

Consent mode v2 wired to your CMP with modelled conversions, plus Shopify's customer privacy API and regional compliance handled correctly.

06

Executive Reporting Layer

One dashboard for blended MER, contribution margin, cohort LTV, new-versus-returning revenue and channel payback. Reconciled to Shopify, refreshed daily.

Scoped and quoted for your Sydney store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Sydney engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Audit & Quantify

We measure the gap between platform-reported and actual orders per channel. Most stores we audit are losing 15-30% of conversion signal before we start.

02

Specification

A written measurement plan: events, parameters, identifiers, consent states and destinations. Signed off before implementation begins.

03

Implement

Server-side container, CAPI, enhanced conversions and consent mode built in a staging environment and validated event by event.

04

Validate

Order-level reconciliation against Shopify for a full week, plus match-quality checks in each platform. We do not sign off on a screenshot of a tag firing.

05

Report & Maintain

Dashboards built, team trained, and monitoring in place to alert on event volume anomalies before someone spots them in a monthly report.

Meta ROAS had slid from 3.6x to 1.9x in a year and the team had spent twelve months buying new creative to fix it. The real cause was measurement: the BigCommerce checkout dropped 22% of purchase events and the Conversions API had never been installed, so both ad platforms were optimising on incomplete data. The named constraint: peak season was 14 weeks out, and the replatform had to be live and stable well before Black Friday traffic arrived.

GA4/Shopify gap 14% → under 2%

“Paid audit, and worth every dollar. Forty pages on where our measurement was lying to us — duplicate purchase events, CAPI never configured, GA4 and Shopify off by 14% — each one ranked by the revenue it was hiding. No pitch deck at the end. We fixed six of the items ourselves before we ever signed a retainer.”

FAQ

Analytics & Data in Sydney — your questions

For channel performance, no — report ex-GST, because the 10% is not yours and including it makes every efficiency metric look better than it is. What matters more is consistency: Shopify, GA4 and your ad platforms all need to agree on the convention, and by default they often do not. We set it explicitly, document the choice, and reconcile a sample period so finance and marketing are working from the same base.

Almost always currency. Orders are now being placed in multiple currencies, Shopify presents them one way, GA4 another, and ad platforms report in their account currency with a conversion applied at a rate and moment nobody recorded. We set a single reporting currency, define where the conversion happens, and separate markets in the reporting layer so an AUD business and a USD business are never averaged into one misleading ROAS.

By modelling actual cost per order by zone and weight band rather than using a flat average, then attaching it to orders in the reporting layer alongside COGS, payment fees and returns. In Australia the spread between a metro delivery and a remote one is wide enough to change whether a campaign is profitable, so an average is not a rounding error — it is the difference between a channel you should scale and one you should cap.

Australian privacy obligations sit under the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles, which are not the same regime as GDPR and do not impose the same consent-banner model. If you are selling into the EU or the UK, that traffic does bring those obligations with it. We configure consent and tracking behaviour per market rather than applying the strictest possible setup globally, since an unnecessary banner on Australian traffic costs measurable data for no compliance benefit.

Browser tracking loses 15-30% of conversions to ad blockers, ITP and consent rejections. Server-side sends events from your own infrastructure, which recovers most of that signal. Better signal means better algorithmic bidding, so it usually pays for itself in media efficiency within a quarter.

Four to six weeks for a typical Shopify store, including the validation week. Complex setups with subscriptions, multiple markets or a headless front end run six to ten. The audit and specification phase takes about a third of that and is the part that determines quality.

Yes. We use Shopify's Web Pixels API and customer events for checkout tracking, which is the supported path since checkout.liquid was retired. Order-level data comes through the server side, so checkout tracking no longer depends on scripts Shopify will not let you inject.
