Marketplace Management in Sydney

Australian marketplaces do not look like American ones, and a plan copied from a US agency deck will have you spending on the wrong platform first.

Delivered remotely for brands across Sydney and Australia.

Why Sydney brands come to us for this

  • Channel order set by where Australian demand for your category actually sits, not by which platform sounds most impressive
  • Listings built for a thinner local catalogue, where good attribute and search-term work still moves rank without a US-sized budget
  • Marketplace prices modelled against real zone freight, so orders to WA and regional NSW are not funded by Sydney metro margin
  • Reverse-season SKUs assessed for a US or UK marketplace listing, with landed cost and importer questions settled first
  • Marketplace inventory received ahead of the Click Frenzy to Boxing Day run, because a small fulfilment network has little slack at peak

Amazon Australia is young and, only recently, the largest marketplace in the country. It arrived long after the local shopping habit had formed, passed eBay on share within the last couple of years, and still runs thinner category catalogues than the American equivalents off a fulfilment footprint that covers a continent from a handful of sites. That combination produces a specific opportunity and a specific ceiling: a properly built listing can reach a real rank position in a category where the competitive set is a dozen sellers rather than four hundred, and it will still be selling into a much smaller pool of buyers than a US listing of the same quality. Both halves have to be said out loud before anyone commits a budget, because the accounts that disappoint here are usually the ones scaled against American benchmarks.

eBay is the part visiting agencies get wrong in the other direction. It is no longer the biggest marketplace here, but Australians took to it early and a very large habitual buying population stayed, and for a defined set of categories — parts and accessories, replacement and compatible items, tools, outdoor and camping gear, discontinued lines, anything searched by model number — it still carries real volume rather than a nostalgia listing. Whether it belongs in your plan is a category question, not a brand-prestige one. Beyond those two, TikTok Shop is worth testing where the product demonstrates on video and the margin carries a creator commission on top of the platform fee, and the smaller local marketplaces have been through enough ownership and strategy change in recent years that we check what a channel actually is today before recommending catalogue work for it.

The economics are where an Australian marketplace plan is won. Domestic freight is the dominant variable cost in this market, and a national marketplace price set from a Sydney-metro delivery cost quietly loses money on every order heading to WA, the NT or regional NSW. So contribution is modelled per unit after referral fees, fulfilment, GST treatment and real zone freight, and advertising targets are set from that rather than from an ACoS figure. Then the channel is pointed at what it is good for. Marketplaces put your product in front of Australians who have never heard of you; the reorder, the bundle, the refill subscription and the relationship belong on the Shopify store you own. Package inserts, permitted platform follow-up tools and marketplace-only pack sizes are how that is built without breaking a policy.

Local context

A young Amazon, a stubborn eBay, and a selling season that runs backwards

Sydney brands have a marketplace option that northern-hemisphere brands do not: the calendar. Swim, resortwear, sun care, outdoor living and cooling products are made and stocked here for a summer that lands while the United States and the UK are in winter — and again, the reverse. A US Amazon listing opened in the local off-season can sell a range that is dead at home, which turns a stock problem into a channel, provided the customs, landed-cost and importer questions are answered properly rather than waved at. Domestically the shape is different again. Peak here concentrates hard through Click Frenzy, an imported Black Friday and then Boxing Day, and marketplace inventory has to be received well before those weeks because a fulfilment network with few sites has little slack when receiving queues back up. And freight decides the catalogue: bulky homewares and linen frequently make more sense seller-fulfilled on your own zone-rated carrier accounts than in a fulfilment centre, while small, fast-moving skincare and accessories are exactly what the platform's logistics reward. Those two decisions are made SKU by SKU, before a single listing is written.

Scope

What Marketplace Channel includes

The same standard of work we run for every client — applied to a Sydney brand’s realities.

Full service detail
01

Catalogue & Listing Rebuild

Titles, bullets, backend search terms, variation parentage and category nodes rebuilt across Amazon Seller or Vendor Central, TikTok Shop and Walmart. Suppressions and stranded inventory fixed at the cause, not resubmitted.

02

Brand Registry, A+ & Brand Story

Brand Registry enrolment, A+ and Premium A+ modules, Brand Story and Storefront pages built to each platform's image and copy specs. Produced inside this service because the formats are fixed.

03

Sponsored Products, Brands & Display

Campaigns split by intent and margin band, converting search terms promoted to exact, negatives maintained weekly, and targets set from contribution margin instead of a category average.

04

Fulfilment & Fee Economics

FBA against FBM modelled per SKU on size tier, storage, return rate and reimbursement recovery. Some products should never enter a fulfilment centre, and we name which of yours.

05

TikTok Shop & Creator Seeding

Catalogue sync, listing compliance, sample seeding to affiliates, and live and video commerce, run as a mechanic of this channel rather than as a separate affiliate programme.

06

Channel Strategy & the Route Back

SKU allocation, MAP and pricing alignment, marketplace-only bundles and pack sizes, plus the permitted paths home: package inserts, Brand Registry tools and platform-allowed follow-up.

Scoped and quoted for your Sydney store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Sydney engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Account & Catalogue Audit

Listing quality, suppressions, buy-box history, variation structure, the fee and returns reports and ninety days of search terms. You get the findings whether you hire us or not.

02

Fix the Listings

Parentage, titles, backend terms, imagery and A+ rebuilt before any spend moves. Advertising a listing that converts badly buys traffic for whoever else is in the carousel.

03

Draw the Channel Lines

Which SKUs sell where, at what price, in what pack size, agreed with you in writing. The marketplace should not be bidding against your own store for the same order.

04

Advertise to Margin

Sponsored campaigns rebuilt by intent and margin band, with ACoS and TACoS targets derived from contribution per unit after referral, fulfilment and return costs.

05

Compound & Route Back

Weekly search-term mining, monthly fee and reimbursement review, and the insert and registry mechanics that give a marketplace buyer a reason to reorder on your site.

FAQ

Marketplace Channel in Sydney — your questions

For some categories yes, for others not yet. The buyer pool is far smaller than the American one, so the honest way to decide is to look at the depth of your category's Australian catalogue and the search volume behind your top terms, not at Amazon's global reputation. Where the competitive set is thin, good listing work goes further here than it would in the US and the setup pays back quickly. Where a category is already crowded with imported low-cost sellers, we will usually tell you the money is better spent on your own store.

That is one of the better reasons an Australian brand opens an overseas marketplace, and it is an operations decision before a marketing one. You need a named importer of record, customs and duty costed per unit, inventory sent far enough ahead of a northern spring to be receivable, and pricing that survives the freight. Done properly it converts a seasonal stock overhang into revenue in your quiet months. Done as an afterthought it puts your inventory in a foreign warehouse at the wrong end of the year, which is an expensive way to learn the lesson.

Possibly, and it depends on what you sell rather than how you feel about the logo. Australia has an unusually established eBay buying habit, and for spare parts, compatible items, refurbished or ex-display stock, run-out lines and anything bought by specification it carries real volume. It is a poor fit for a considered, story-led purchase at full price. The reasonable position is to test it with a defined slice of the catalogue — clearance, accessories, replacements — rather than either dismissing it outright or putting your hero range on it.

We are straight about the arrangement: ConversionEX has one office, in Albuquerque, no Australian entity and no local staff, and Sydney sits most of a day ahead of us. Marketplace work suits that better than most disciplines, because appeals, case replies and account-health notices arrive on the platform's schedule anyway. What we set up is monitoring that does not depend on someone being awake — alerts routed to a shared, monitored channel, pre-agreed actions we can take without waiting for a call, such as pausing spend on a suppressed listing, and a written handover each day so your morning starts with the account state rather than with questions.

It can, and that is the failure mode we manage against rather than pretend away. Marketplaces are rented shelf space: the platform owns the shopper, sets the fees and can change both without asking. We use them for the thing they are genuinely good at, which is putting your product in front of people who have never heard of you, then arrange pack sizes, bundles and pricing so the reorder has a reason to happen on your own store.

Not directly, and treat anyone who promises it as a liability. Amazon does not give sellers the buyer's email address, and mining order reports to build a marketing list breaks their terms. The legitimate routes are package inserts offering registration, warranty or a refill incentive, Brand Registry tools such as Customer Engagement and Brand Tailored Promotions that reach your followers inside Amazon, and Buy with Prime on your own storefront where the economics hold. Slower, and it survives an audit.

Google and Meta buy traffic for a store you control. A marketplace is a sales channel with its own search engine, its own ad auction, its own fulfilment network and its own fee schedule. The reporting never reconciles with your Shopify numbers, the failure modes are suppression and buy-box loss rather than creative fatigue, and nothing means anything until the unit economics are modelled after fees.
