eCommerce SEO & GEO in Sydney

Technical and content SEO for Sydney Shopify catalogues, plus the international structure that keeps an AU store from competing with its own US pages.

Delivered remotely for brands across Sydney and Australia.

Grow · Sydney

Why Sydney brands come to us for this

  • Collection architecture built for the specific queries brands can actually win, given how much of the head term marketplaces hold
  • AU spelling, sizing and product vocabulary applied across titles, metadata and body copy rather than left as US defaults
  • Content calendar inverted to Australian seasons, with the same assets reusable six months later for US and UK markets
  • Hreflang, canonicals and market routing set up correctly so AU, US and UK pages stop competing with each other
  • Stockist and where-to-buy pages built for brands with Sydney retail distribution, capturing high-intent search that paid never sees

Ranking in Australia is a different competitive set from ranking in the US, and the difference is mostly marketplace pressure. Amazon.com.au, eBay and Catch sit on a large share of commercial results, alongside the department retailers, so a Sydney brand rarely wins a generic head term and does not need to. The revenue lives in the specific: the material, the fit, the use case, the Australian-season query. A collection architecture that expresses those distinctions — and expresses them as crawlable, linked, properly titled pages rather than filter parameters — is where most of the gain sits.

Language and season are technical concerns here, not stylistic ones. Australians search in Australian English and Australian units, with AU dress sizing and local product vocabulary that does not match the US term for the same object. Content calendars are inverted too: buying-guide demand for swim, outdoor and cooling products builds through September and October, while the northern hemisphere is writing about coats. Publishing on a US content calendar means arriving six months late to your own market, every year.

The structural risk arrives the moment you open a second market. An AU store that adds USD and GBP pricing without correct hreflang, canonical handling and market-specific domains or subfolders ends up with three near-identical pages competing for the same query, and Google choosing the wrong one for the wrong country. We build that properly at the point of expansion, and we extend the same work into generative engines — specification tables, clear entity and brand information, and answer-shaped content — so your products can be cited in AI answers rather than summarised out of them.

Reverse seasons, real vocabulary, and a market of 27 million

A Sydney SEO calendar is planned backwards from everyone else's. Swimwear research peaks while the northern hemisphere is deep in winter, outdoor living and cooling categories build through spring towards a January that is both peak heat and post-Christmas spend, and gifting demand compresses into a fortnight that overlaps a heatwave rather than snow. We build the content programme on that clock, which also means the assets are ready six months before they are useful to a US market — a genuine advantage for a brand running both. The vocabulary work is unglamorous and pays: local terms, AU spelling throughout titles and body copy, sizing expressed in Australian sizes with a conversion table rather than the other way around, and stockist pages for brands sold through Sydney retailers, which pick up a steady stream of high-intent 'where to buy' searches that never touch a paid channel.

Scoped and quoted for your Sydney store

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Technical Audit

A full crawl plus log-file analysis to find what Googlebot actually sees and where crawl budget is being spent. Findings ranked by revenue impact.

02

Demand Mapping

Keyword research mapped to your catalogue and margin, not to search volume alone. High-volume terms you cannot profitably serve get cut.

03

Fix the Foundation

Technical remediation ships first. There is no point building content on a site that wastes half its crawl budget on filter URLs.

04

Build & Publish

Collection landing pages and commercial content shipped on a fixed monthly cadence, each with internal links planned before it goes live.

05

Measure & Iterate

Monthly reporting on non-branded organic revenue, index coverage and AI citations. Branded queries are excluded from every growth number we show you.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Outdoor & Sports Gear

~$7M/yr, 480 SKUs, US + EU via Shopify Markets · Shopify Plus (Shopify Markets, 3 regions)

Paid social carried 81% of revenue and CAC had climbed 44% in eighteen months. Organic sat at 2,100 sessions a month against category competitors doing ten times that, and the EU storefront duplicated the US catalogue with no hreflang at all. The named constraint: three national retailers own the head terms with link profiles this brand could not match in a year, so the plan had to win on query depth instead of authority.

+58% organic revenue YoY

“Honestly I signed for the SEO and the AI-search piece was a footnote in the proposal I skimmed. Then in March our product pages started getting quoted in ChatGPT answers for insulated growler queries, and that traffic showed up in GA4 with real purchase intent attached to it. Organic revenue is up 58% year over year and roughly a fifth of that comes from surfaces that didn't exist when we signed the contract. I still don't fully understand it. I've stopped questioning it.”

FAQ

eCommerce SEO in Sydney — your questions

Not on the generic head term, and chasing it is how SEO budgets get wasted here. Marketplaces and department retailers hold those results with domain strength you are not going to out-spend. What they are poor at is specificity — a particular fit, fabric, use case or Australian-condition question answered by someone who actually makes the product. Those queries convert better anyway, and there are far more of them in aggregate than the head term.

It will if the international structure is wrong, which is the common outcome. Duplicate product pages across markets without correct hreflang and canonicals leave Google picking one version and serving it to everyone, so Australian shoppers land on USD pages and conversion falls before anyone notices a ranking issue. Done properly — market subfolders or domains, hreflang covering every alternate, market-specific canonicals — the two markets support each other rather than compete.

You need both versions, market by market. Australian pages should read as Australian, including sizing conventions and local product terms, because those are the words people search with and the ones that signal you are a local option with local delivery. US-facing pages should read as American. Shopify's market-level content tooling handles that without duplicating your catalogue, and the effort is far smaller than the conversion cost of getting it wrong.

It matters most for the research-heavy questions that used to arrive via buying guides — which sunscreen, which fabric for humid conditions, how a size run works. AI answers increasingly absorb that traffic, and being cited depends on structured, unambiguous product data, clear entity information about the brand, and content that answers a question directly rather than circling it. The work overlaps heavily with good technical SEO, so it is not a separate budget line so much as a change in how content is shaped.

Technical fixes can move impressions inside four to six weeks. New collection pages and content typically need three to six months to rank on commercial terms. Nine months is a fair window to judge the programme on revenue. Anyone quoting thirty days is describing a fluke, not a plan.

Always. Branded queries grow when your paid media grows, so including them inflates SEO numbers for work SEO did not do. Every growth figure we report to you is non-branded, and we show the branded split separately so you can see both.

Generative engine optimisation is making your store citable by AI answer engines. It matters now for research-heavy categories where buyers ask an assistant before they search. The work overlaps heavily with good technical SEO: clean entities, correct schema, extractable answers and content worth citing.
