Shopify Agency in Madrid, Spain

Madrid brands have two expansion routes most European sellers do not: north into the EU, and west into markets that already speak their language. We build the Shopify store that can serve both.

Madrid is eight hours ahead of Mountain Time, so the shared window is short — late afternoon for you, early morning for us, about two hours in practice. Standing calls sit there, everything else is written down, and work briefed at the end of your day is usually back with you by the next morning.

The market

What selling online in Madrid actually looks like

Madrid is Spain's distribution centre before it is anything else. Sitting in the middle of the peninsula with motorways radiating in every direction, it is where national inventory lives — the logistics corridor along the A-2 through Coslada and San Fernando de Henares carries a large share of it, and the inland dry port at Coslada connects the city by rail to the seaports at Valencia, Barcelona and Bilbao. Barajas handles the air freight. Mercamadrid, on the southern edge of the city, is one of the largest fresh food wholesale markets in the world and anchors an enormous gourmet food trade, much of which now sells direct as well as to restaurants.

The consumer brand economy runs from the luxury retail spine of the Barrio de Salamanca down through the independent shops of Malasaña and Chueca, and out to the corporate and manufacturing base in Alcobendas and Getafe. The exportable categories are specific: extra virgin olive oil and cured products from a country that produces more olive oil than any other, footwear and leather goods carrying a made-in-Spain story that genuinely sells abroad, cosmetics and perfumery with a real manufacturing base behind it, home textiles and ceramics, and racket sports equipment — padel was invented in Mexico, but Spain is where it became a mass participation sport, and the brands, the tour and most of the equipment trade are still run from here, which makes it a live DTC category with a global audience. The calendar has its own rhythm: rebajas in January and summer, near-total shutdown in August, and Reyes on 6 January extending the gifting season a full week past where the rest of Europe ends it.

Verticals

Who we build for in Madrid

The categories that dominate Madrid’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Olive oil & gourmet food

Weight-based shipping, harvest-dated inventory and gift sets are what turn a wholesale producer into a direct brand with export margin.

02

Footwear & leather goods

EU-to-US-to-UK size conversion is a genuine conversion problem, and solving it on the product page is cheaper than paying for the returns.

03

Cosmetics & perfumery

Regimen bundles and replenishment subscriptions fit the category, and per-market ingredient and claim rules can be handled with market-specific content.

04

Padel & racket sports

Spec-led buying, seasonal model cycles and club wholesale all coexist — Shopify B2B keeps the trade side behind a login on the same catalogue.

05

Home textiles & ceramics

Bulk, breakage and freight-rated shipping need real shipping profiles rather than a flat rate that quietly loses money on every heavy order.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Madrid brands

Two expansion routes, one store

The EU handled through OSS, correct per-country VAT and language variants; Latin America handled as an export market with its own pricing, duties and payment methods. Same catalogue, different market configurations.

Spanish that travels, or does not

Peninsular Spanish and Mexican or Colombian Spanish are not interchangeable in commercial copy — vocabulary, tone and even sizing conventions differ. If a Latin American market matters, it gets its own content, not a copy of the Spanish one.

A calendar built on rebajas, August and Reyes

Full-margin trading between the sale periods, build and testing work in the dead weeks of August, and a gifting plan that runs to the sixth of January rather than stopping on the twenty-fourth of December.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Madrid

No. ConversionEX is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we work with Spanish clients remotely. There is no Castellana address on this site, because there is no Castellana office behind it. We work in English, Madrid is eight hours ahead of us, and we travel for kickoffs and quarterly planning where the engagement justifies the trip.

Sometimes, and it depends heavily on the market and the product. Mexico and Chile are workable for higher-value, low-weight goods where a customer will accept a two to three week delivery and a duty-paid price. Argentina and Brazil carry import restrictions and customs friction that can make direct shipping unviable. Our honest advice for some markets is a distributor or a marketplace rather than direct — we would rather tell you that before you build for it.

Cards still carry most of the volume, but Bizum has become a normal way for Spanish consumers to pay online and offering it costs you nothing in conversion terms. Instalment payment also has genuine traction in Spain on higher order values. We test the option set and the order it appears in, because a Spanish shopper who does not see a method she recognises reads the store as foreign before she has read the price.

Almost never. Shopify Markets runs a Spanish domestic market, an EU market with per-country VAT under OSS, and an English international market from one admin and one catalogue, with the URL structure and hreflang set up so search engines serve the right version to the right country. Separate stores multiply your inventory, content and reporting problems for a benefit most brands at this size never actually collect.

Domestic sales carry Spanish IVA at the applicable rate, displayed tax-inclusive as Spanish consumers expect. Cross the EU-wide threshold and the rate that applies is the buyer's, not yours — a French order carries French VAT — which you then declare on a single quarterly OSS return filed here in Spain rather than registering in seven countries. We configure the rates, the display and the invoicing data on the Shopify side and coordinate with your gestoría on the filing, which is their job rather than ours.
