Shopify Agency in Amsterdam, Netherlands

A small home market attached to the best distribution network in Europe. We build Amsterdam brands a Shopify store that sells in Dutch at home and in four more currencies across the border.

Amsterdam is eight hours ahead of Mountain Time, so the overlap is real but narrow: roughly 4pm to 6pm your time is 8am to 10am ours. Live calls land at the end of your working day, and anything you send during your day is picked up as we start, which usually means a reply waiting the next morning.

The market

What selling online in Amsterdam actually looks like

The Netherlands punches far above its population in ecommerce because it is where goods enter Europe. The Port of Amsterdam and Schiphol's air freight operation sit inside one of the densest road and rail networks on the continent, and the Article 23 import VAT deferment licence lets an importer defer VAT to their return instead of paying it at the border — which is a large part of why so many non-EU brands run their European fulfilment from Dutch soil. AMS-IX gives the country serious network infrastructure on top. For a local merchant, all of this means the logistics side of selling into Germany, Belgium and France is cheaper and less painful than almost anywhere else in Europe.

The brand economy in the city itself is design-led and export-minded. Amsterdam has been a global denim centre for two decades and the surrounding apparel trade goes with it. Furniture, lighting and interiors studios cluster around the Jordaan and Amsterdam-Noord. Cycling is not a hobby category here, it is infrastructure, and the parts and accessories trade behind it is real. Horticulture is a genuine industry with the Aalsmeer flower auction, the largest in the world, sitting twenty minutes from the city and feeding a large plant, bulb and dried-flower export trade. Add specialty coffee roasters, streetwear, and food exporters, and you get a merchant base that is used to shipping abroad. The domestic calendar has its own shape too: Sinterklaas on 5 December pulls the Dutch gifting peak forward of Christmas, so a Q4 plan copied from a US brand arrives about three weeks late.

Verticals

Who we build for in Amsterdam

The categories that dominate Amsterdam’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Denim & apparel

Fit data, fabric detail and honest sizing content do more for returns rate than any post-purchase policy tweak.

02

Furniture, lighting & interiors

Long lead times, freight-rated shipping and configurable options need real Shopify variant and metafield work, not a plugin.

03

Cycling & bike parts

Compatibility and fitment filtering is the whole sale in this category — buyers arrive knowing exactly what they need to match.

04

Plants, bulbs & dried flowers

Dispatch windows, perishability and country-by-country plant import rules belong in the shipping logic, not in an email apology.

05

Specialty coffee & food exporters

Subscriptions fit consumables perfectly, and EU food labelling requirements can be handled cleanly with structured product data.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Amsterdam brands

Dutch storefront, English working relationship

We will run the whole engagement in English because you already do. The storefront is a different question: Dutch product copy, navigation, checkout and transactional email are what domestic conversion actually rests on.

One store, the whole EU

OSS registration, per-country pricing, correct VAT rates and hreflang set up once and maintained, so Germany and Belgium stop being a manual workaround.

The withdrawal right is a margin line, not a policy page

Fourteen days to change their mind is a statutory fact, and in apparel it is the largest single drain on contribution margin in this market. We work the causes — garment measurements, imagery, expectation setting at the point of sale — because tightening the policy only moves the complaint from the returns queue to the review page.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Amsterdam

No. ConversionEX works out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and serves Dutch clients remotely. We will not claim a Herengracht address we do not have. Amsterdam is eight hours ahead of us, so recurring calls sit at the end of your day. We come over for a kickoff and once or twice a year after that, on engagements where the flight is worth what it costs.

For selling to Dutch consumers, yes. Business English is near-universal in the Netherlands but shoppers still buy in their own language, and the gap shows up in add-to-cart and checkout completion rather than in bounce rate. For cross-border selling into markets where you are the foreign brand anyway, an English storefront is often fine to start. Shopify Markets lets you run both properly, with separate URLs and correct hreflang.

iDEAL is available through Shopify Payments and through most major providers, and it should be positioned first at checkout rather than buried under card fields. Beyond that, buy-now-pay-later has genuine share in the Netherlands and PayPal carries cross-border trust. We test the ordering and the option set rather than assuming, because payment presentation is one of the cheapest conversion levers available.

It matters if you bring stock in from outside the EU. Article 23 lets you defer import VAT to your periodic return instead of paying it at the border and reclaiming it later — a cash-flow difference rather than a tax saving, but on a container of stock it is a real one, and it is a large part of why so many foreign brands fulfil Europe from Dutch soil. It is arranged through your fiscal representative, not through us. What it changes on the store side is nothing. What it changes for a growing merchant is how much working capital is sitting with customs at any given moment.

It is worth building for what the marketplace cannot give you: the customer relationship, the email list, bundles, subscriptions and control over how the product is presented. It is not worth building as a mirror of your marketplace listings. The measure we care about is the share of revenue coming from channels you own, moved up deliberately quarter by quarter rather than all at once.
