Marketplace Management in Washington, DC

For a Washington institution the marketplace question is rarely whether to sell there — it is who is already selling your things there without asking.

Delivered remotely for brands across Washington and District of Columbia.

Why Washington brands come to us for this

  • Reseller audit and Brand Registry enforcement so third-party offers on your own titles stop setting the price
  • ISBN and identifier handling built for publications, standing editions and short-run printing
  • Exhibition merchandise listed with an end date so a closed show does not leave stranded inventory behind
  • A written rule for which catalogue lines stay member-gated and never go near a marketplace
  • Walmart Marketplace and TikTok Shop opened only after the Amazon catalogue is stable, never in parallel

Most organisations in this city discover Amazon by accident. Someone forwards a link to your own publication, offered by four sellers you have never contracted with, one of them holding the buy box at a price your members would be annoyed to see. Or the exhibition tote from a show that closed in March is still being sold by a reseller who bought forty of them at the register. The catalogue is already on the shelf. Nobody is managing it.

So the first work here is control rather than growth. Brand Registry so the detail page is yours to write, correct identifier handling so a publication with an ISBN sits in the right attribute instead of failing as a missing GTIN, parent-child structure so the paperback, the hardback and the digital edition behave as one product family, and A+ content that gives an unfamiliar buyer the context a title alone cannot. Then a deliberate decision about who is allowed to resell you, because enforcement without a reseller policy behind it is just correspondence.

Then the harder question, which is what actually belongs there. A great deal of what Washington sells should not go on a marketplace at all — member-priced goods, credential materials, anything whose value depends on gated access or on the relationship. Putting those on Amazon converts a member benefit into a commodity and hands the customer to the platform for a fee. What does belong is the publication with genuine outside demand, the general-audience book, the museum product that a visitor would look for months later from another state. Those we run properly, and every one of them carries a route back to the store you own.

Local context

Publications behave one way on a marketplace, membership goods another

Washington's catalogues split cleanly once you look at them channel by channel. Publications, reports and general-interest books have real outside demand and Amazon is where people go to find them, but that category has its own physics: an ISBN has to be handled as the product identifier rather than treated as a missing barcode, the used and third-party offers on your own title compete with the new copy for the buy box, and print-on-demand and short-run editions have to be listed so the availability shown matches what your printer can actually deliver. Museum and exhibition merchandise has the opposite problem — the demand window is short, and a listing that outlives the show either strands inventory or keeps selling a product you can no longer make. Membership merchandise mostly should not be there at all, because a marketplace strips out the one thing that makes it valuable, which is that it signals belonging to something you joined. Union Market and 14th Street food and specialty retail are the genuine consumer exception: shelf-stable regional goods travel, Walmart Marketplace is worth opening once Amazon is stable, and TikTok Shop earns a look where the product demonstrates well on video. Layer over that a metro whose suburban ring is among the highest-income in the country and therefore an unusually heavy marketplace-buying population — the people already ordering your category on a Wednesday afternoon are largely in Bethesda, Arlington and Fairfax, not on the Mall.

The same standard of work we run for every client — applied to a Washington brand’s realities.

Full service detail
01

Catalogue & Listing Rebuild

Titles, bullets, backend search terms, variation parentage and category nodes rebuilt across Amazon Seller or Vendor Central, TikTok Shop and Walmart. Suppressions and stranded inventory fixed at the cause, not resubmitted.

02

Brand Registry, A+ & Brand Story

Brand Registry enrolment, A+ and Premium A+ modules, Brand Story and Storefront pages built to each platform's image and copy specs. Produced inside this service because the formats are fixed.

03

Sponsored Products, Brands & Display

Campaigns split by intent and margin band, converting search terms promoted to exact, negatives maintained weekly, and targets set from contribution margin instead of a category average.

04

Fulfilment & Fee Economics

FBA against FBM modelled per SKU on size tier, storage, return rate and reimbursement recovery. Some products should never enter a fulfilment centre, and we name which of yours.

05

TikTok Shop & Creator Seeding

Catalogue sync, listing compliance, sample seeding to affiliates, and live and video commerce, run as a mechanic of this channel rather than as a separate affiliate programme.

06

Channel Strategy & the Route Back

SKU allocation, MAP and pricing alignment, marketplace-only bundles and pack sizes, plus the permitted paths home: package inserts, Brand Registry tools and platform-allowed follow-up.

Scoped and quoted for your Washington store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Washington engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Account & Catalogue Audit

Listing quality, suppressions, buy-box history, variation structure, the fee and returns reports and ninety days of search terms. You get the findings whether you hire us or not.

02

Fix the Listings

Parentage, titles, backend terms, imagery and A+ rebuilt before any spend moves. Advertising a listing that converts badly buys traffic for whoever else is in the carousel.

03

Draw the Channel Lines

Which SKUs sell where, at what price, in what pack size, agreed with you in writing. The marketplace should not be bidding against your own store for the same order.

04

Advertise to Margin

Sponsored campaigns rebuilt by intent and margin band, with ACoS and TACoS targets derived from contribution per unit after referral, fulfilment and return costs.

05

Compound & Route Back

Weekly search-term mining, monthly fee and reimbursement review, and the insert and registry mechanics that give a marketplace buyer a reason to reorder on your site.

FAQ

Marketplace Channel in Washington — your questions

More than most organisations assume, and less than they hope. Brand Registry gives you control of the detail page content and a reporting route for genuine intellectual property violations, but a seller who legitimately bought stock is generally entitled to resell it. The real levers are upstream: a written reseller policy, authorised-distributor terms, and being the seller who holds the buy box yourself so the price your audience sees is the price you set. We usually start by mapping who is on your listings and how they got the stock.

No, and this is the one place we argue against the channel outright. Member pricing works because it is tied to a relationship and a renewal; a marketplace listing removes both, sells the same object to anyone at a fee, and undercuts the reason to be a member at all. Keep those behind the gated catalogue on your own store. Put the general-audience products on the marketplace and let them do the job they are good at, which is introducing your organisation to somebody who has never heard of it.

Much less than it does on your own store, and that is a useful property. Marketplace demand is national and consumer-driven, so it does not move with federal budget timing the way institutional purchasing in this metro does. That makes the channel a genuine diversification of demand for an organisation whose direct revenue is exposed to the Washington calendar — which is a strategic reason to run it, quite apart from the incremental sales.

ConversionEX has one office and it is in Albuquerque, so this channel is run remotely for you as it is for every client. In practice marketplace work suits that well: the accounts, the fee reports and the catalogue are all cloud systems, and our Mountain Time day covers your afternoons entirely for anything urgent like a suppression or a buy-box loss. What we do need locally is access to product for photography to marketplace image specs, and we plan that around your exhibition and publication schedule rather than ours.

It can, and that is the failure mode we manage against rather than pretend away. Marketplaces are rented shelf space: the platform owns the shopper, sets the fees and can change both without asking. We use them for the thing they are genuinely good at, which is putting your product in front of people who have never heard of you, then arrange pack sizes, bundles and pricing so the reorder has a reason to happen on your own store.

Not directly, and treat anyone who promises it as a liability. Amazon does not give sellers the buyer's email address, and mining order reports to build a marketing list breaks their terms. The legitimate routes are package inserts offering registration, warranty or a refill incentive, Brand Registry tools such as Customer Engagement and Brand Tailored Promotions that reach your followers inside Amazon, and Buy with Prime on your own storefront where the economics hold. Slower, and it survives an audit.

Google and Meta buy traffic for a store you control. A marketplace is a sales channel with its own search engine, its own ad auction, its own fulfilment network and its own fee schedule. The reporting never reconciles with your Shopify numbers, the failure modes are suppression and buy-box loss rather than creative fatigue, and nothing means anything until the unit economics are modelled after fees.
