Why Pittsburgh brands come to us for this

  • Amazon Business configured properly — quantity tiers, tax exemption and business pricing for buyers who order on a PO
  • Brand Registry and unauthorised-listing clean-up so your part is not sold under someone else's title and specification
  • Variation and parentage structure built around how a buyer specifies a part, with cross-references in backend search terms
  • FBA versus merchant-fulfilled decided per SKU against real size tiers, weight and turn — not adopted across the catalogue
  • Faire for the maker and specialty-food side, where wholesale accounts beat one-off marketplace orders

Most Pittsburgh companies we meet are already selling on Amazon and would rather not talk about it. A distributor found their parts listed by someone else. A tooling firm has forty SKUs up there from a 2019 experiment nobody has opened since. A Lawrenceville label sells well on Etsy and has no idea whether it is making money. The channel is running whether or not anyone is managing it, and unmanaged is where the margin goes.

The position we take is not that marketplaces are bad. It is that they are somebody else's shelf. The shopper who buys your fastener on Amazon is Amazon's customer — you do not get their email, you do not set the fee schedule, and the search algorithm you rank in can change on a Tuesday. So we run the channel for the one thing it does better than anything you own: putting a product in front of a buyer with no prior relationship. Then we structure pack sizes, bundles and post-purchase materials so the second order has a reason to happen on your store, where the relationship and the repeat margin actually live.

For this metro that usually starts with Amazon Business rather than the consumer storefront. A large share of what Pittsburgh makes is bought by somebody with a purchase order — MRO consumables, safety stock, abrasives, fittings, lab supply — and Amazon Business is where a growing number of those procurement departments now spend, with tax exemption, quantity tiers and business-only pricing that behave nothing like a retail listing. Getting that right is a catalogue and pricing exercise: parentage and variation structure that reflects how a buyer specifies the part, backend search terms carrying cross-references and legacy part numbers, A+ content that answers the spec question a PDF used to answer, and unit economics modelled after referral fees and returns rather than before them.

Local context

Two very different marketplace problems in one city

The industrial half of Pittsburgh and the consumer half need almost opposite work, and lumping them together is how these accounts go wrong. For a Monongahela Valley supplier or a Robinson distributor, the enemy is invisibility and unauthorised listings: your part is on Amazon under a reseller's title with the wrong specification, no brand control, and a buy box you do not own. That is a Brand Registry, parentage and catalogue-hygiene job first, and an advertising job a long way second — Sponsored Products against part numbers and cross-references only once the listing actually describes the product. Freight-class and oversized items usually stay merchant-fulfilled, because FBA size tiers punish anything heavy and slow-moving, and Pittsburgh's rail and river freight advantages are on your side of that trade, not Amazon's. The consumer half is a different animal. Butler Street makers and Strip District importers belong on Faire far more than on Amazon, because Faire brings wholesale accounts rather than one-off buyers and the economics survive. Collegiate and fan merchandise is the one category where we will slow you down: licensed marks require documented authorisation on every platform, and a September-to-January demand curve means anything sitting in FBA over the winter is paying peak storage rates for the privilege. We plan those SKUs in the summer with the seller account, not in November with the fulfilment centre.

Scope

What Marketplace Channel includes

The same standard of work we run for every client — applied to a Pittsburgh brand’s realities.

Full service detail
01

Catalogue & Listing Rebuild

Titles, bullets, backend search terms, variation parentage and category nodes rebuilt across Amazon Seller or Vendor Central, TikTok Shop and Walmart. Suppressions and stranded inventory fixed at the cause, not resubmitted.

02

Brand Registry, A+ & Brand Story

Brand Registry enrolment, A+ and Premium A+ modules, Brand Story and Storefront pages built to each platform's image and copy specs. Produced inside this service because the formats are fixed.

03

Sponsored Products, Brands & Display

Campaigns split by intent and margin band, converting search terms promoted to exact, negatives maintained weekly, and targets set from contribution margin instead of a category average.

04

Fulfilment & Fee Economics

FBA against FBM modelled per SKU on size tier, storage, return rate and reimbursement recovery. Some products should never enter a fulfilment centre, and we name which of yours.

05

TikTok Shop & Creator Seeding

Catalogue sync, listing compliance, sample seeding to affiliates, and live and video commerce, run as a mechanic of this channel rather than as a separate affiliate programme.

06

Channel Strategy & the Route Back

SKU allocation, MAP and pricing alignment, marketplace-only bundles and pack sizes, plus the permitted paths home: package inserts, Brand Registry tools and platform-allowed follow-up.

Scoped and quoted for your Pittsburgh store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Pittsburgh engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Account & Catalogue Audit

Listing quality, suppressions, buy-box history, variation structure, the fee and returns reports and ninety days of search terms. You get the findings whether you hire us or not.

02

Fix the Listings

Parentage, titles, backend terms, imagery and A+ rebuilt before any spend moves. Advertising a listing that converts badly buys traffic for whoever else is in the carousel.

03

Draw the Channel Lines

Which SKUs sell where, at what price, in what pack size, agreed with you in writing. The marketplace should not be bidding against your own store for the same order.

04

Advertise to Margin

Sponsored campaigns rebuilt by intent and margin band, with ACoS and TACoS targets derived from contribution per unit after referral, fulfilment and return costs.

05

Compound & Route Back

Weekly search-term mining, monthly fee and reimbursement review, and the insert and registry mechanics that give a marketplace buyer a reason to reorder on your site.

FAQ

Marketplace Channel in Pittsburgh — your questions

That is a Brand Registry problem before it is a legal one. Registering the brand gives you control of the listing content, the ability to report infringing or inaccurate listings, and the tooling to stop a reseller writing your product page for you. It rarely removes every third-party seller, and anyone promising that is overselling. What it reliably does is make the listing say what you say it says, and put you in a position to compete for the buy box on your own item.

Often more relevant than the consumer side. Amazon Business has become a standing purchasing route for maintenance, safety and consumable spend at exactly the mid-sized manufacturers your reps call on, and buyers use it because it clears an approval process quickly. The work is different from retail: quantity discount tiers, business-only pricing, tax exemption handling and lead-time accuracy matter far more than lifestyle imagery. It also tends to surface accounts you can then convert onto your own B2B store with proper terms.

Only if the two are priced and merchandised as if they were the same channel. We keep account pricing, net terms, contract items and full-line availability on your store, and put a defined subset on the marketplace — usually consumables, entry items and single-unit versions of things you normally sell by the case. The marketplace order is the trial; the portal is where a buyer with an account belongs. Deciding which SKUs go where is most of the strategy work.

No, because none of this work happens on your floor. Seller Central, Brand Registry, feed files and advertising consoles are all remote by nature, and we work from Albuquerque on Mountain Time, which lines up with a Pittsburgh morning by mid-morning here and leaves the afternoon overlapping fully. What we do need from you locally is physical: product samples, accurate dimensional and weight data, and someone who can answer a specification question. We schedule a standing call and share the account rather than reporting at you monthly.

It can, and that is the failure mode we manage against rather than pretend away. Marketplaces are rented shelf space: the platform owns the shopper, sets the fees and can change both without asking. We use them for the thing they are genuinely good at, which is putting your product in front of people who have never heard of you, then arrange pack sizes, bundles and pricing so the reorder has a reason to happen on your own store.

Not directly, and treat anyone who promises it as a liability. Amazon does not give sellers the buyer's email address, and mining order reports to build a marketing list breaks their terms. The legitimate routes are package inserts offering registration, warranty or a refill incentive, Brand Registry tools such as Customer Engagement and Brand Tailored Promotions that reach your followers inside Amazon, and Buy with Prime on your own storefront where the economics hold. Slower, and it survives an audit.

Google and Meta buy traffic for a store you control. A marketplace is a sales channel with its own search engine, its own ad auction, its own fulfilment network and its own fee schedule. The reporting never reconciles with your Shopify numbers, the failure modes are suppression and buy-box loss rather than creative fatigue, and nothing means anything until the unit economics are modelled after fees.
