Shopify Agency in Washington, DC

DC sells to members, institutions and visitors — three buyers with three different checkouts. We build Shopify stores that serve all of them without three separate systems.

We work with Washington brands remotely — no local storefront, just the same senior team on your timezone.

The market

What selling online in Washington actually looks like

Washington's commerce economy is unusual because the money is in services, not in goods. The metro produces very few consumer products at scale, but it buys an enormous amount of them through organisations: trade associations, professional bodies, advocacy groups, foundations, universities, hospitals and the museum and cultural sector. DC holds the country's largest concentration of association and nonprofit head offices, and every one of them has a merchandise programme, a publications catalogue, a conference store or all three — usually running on something that was set up years ago and never revisited. That is the single biggest pool of unglamorous, high-value Shopify work in the region.

The second layer is affluent household spending in the suburbs. Several counties in the Washington ring — in Northern Virginia and Montgomery County, Maryland — sit among the highest-median-income counties in the United States, which supports a dense band of independent retail from Georgetown and 14th Street out through Bethesda and Clarendon. And a third layer is visitors: spring school-trip and cherry blossom season, then summer, drive a merchandise cycle that has almost nothing to do with the calendar the rest of the country runs on. Add the federal fiscal year ending 30 September and the periodic shutdown, and you get a market where the buying calendar has to be modelled deliberately rather than assumed.

Verticals

Who we build for in Washington

The categories that dominate Washington’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Associations & membership organisations

Customer tags and Shopify B2B give members their own pricing, gated products and renewal-linked access without a second storefront.

02

Museums & cultural institutions

Exhibition-linked collections, limited runs and unified POS mean the gift shop and the online store share one inventory truth.

03

Universities & alumni merchandise

Licensing rules, department stores and parent buyers all fit in one catalogue with permissions applied per audience.

04

Publishers & research organisations

Digital downloads, print, standing orders and institutional site licences can live in one Shopify catalogue instead of three systems.

05

Independent food, coffee & specialty retail

The Union Market and 14th Street corridor sells locally and ships nationally, which is a POS-plus-online problem before it is a marketing one.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Washington brands

Member pricing that actually works

Dues tiers, gated products and member-only pricing driven by real customer data, not a discount code emailed once a year and shared everywhere.

Purchase orders, net terms and tax exemption

Universities, hospitals and government-adjacent buyers cannot use a normal checkout. We build the B2B path they can actually get through procurement.

Accessibility built in, not bolted on

Institutional buyers in this city ask about WCAG conformance early and in writing. We build to it from the theme up rather than installing an overlay and hoping.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Washington

No. ConversionEX works from one office, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we serve DC clients remotely. We are on Mountain Time, two hours behind you, so our morning is your late morning and there is a full working overlap every day. We fly in to start a project, and for the planning session before your peak season where the scope earns the trip.

Yes, on Shopify Plus with B2B. Approved company accounts can check out on net terms against a purchase order number, with tax exemption applied at the company level rather than typed in by a buyer. The part that matters operationally is the approval workflow — who gets an account, who sets the terms, and what happens when a department orders outside them.

Shopify POS runs on the same inventory and customer records as the web store, so an exhibition item sold at the register reduces online stock immediately. That also means visitors who buy in person can be identified and marketed to afterwards, which is usually the larger opportunity. Most institutions we meet are running a legacy till system that shares nothing with the website.

We treat the event calendar as the roadmap. Build and testing work happens between events, then the storefront, inventory and email sequences are staged before the opening rather than during it. Conference and exhibition merchandising rewards preparation far more than reaction, because the demand window is short and does not come back.

More than most DC merchants expect, and it usually shows up as a spending pause in the suburbs rather than a collapse in orders. The practical answer is diversification of demand: national SEO reach, an owned email and SMS list, and enough non-local revenue that a Washington-specific disruption is a dip rather than a quarter. We plan retention accordingly.
