Milan brands understand this channel better than they think they do. Selling through a retailer means the customer belongs to the retailer; a marketplace is the same trade, made faster, with a fee schedule and an advertising auction bolted on. Amazon.it takes most of the Italian volume. eBay.it kept a relevance in Italy that it lost in other markets, particularly in parts, refurbished stock and hard-to-find lines. Zalando's partner programme is where an apparel or accessories label finds fashion volume without building an audience first. And for a design or specialty-food producer with a wholesale book, Faire is the shelf that matters most, because it puts you in front of independent retailers abroad between the fairs rather than only during them.
The obstacle is that Lombardy's best products do not fit the model. A made-to-order sofa with a six-week lead time cannot honour a marketplace dispatch window, and trying to force it damages the account health metrics that decide whether you keep the buy box on everything else. Lighting is worse than it looks: it is an electrical product, so it drags in producer registration for electricals and, depending on the fitting, batteries too. Bulk furniture prices out of any fulfilment network on size tier alone. The workable answer is almost never the flagship — it is the accessories, the small lighting, the ready-stock lines and the consumables, with the bespoke programme kept where it belongs, on your own store with a configurator and a lead time you state honestly.
The third problem is the one most Milan brands actually arrive with: you are already on Amazon.it and you did not put yourself there. A distributor or a reseller listed you, wrote the title out of a price list, used a photograph from a catalogue three seasons old, and now owns the page for your own product. A brand registration gets you control of the content on that listing whether or not you are selling the units, which is often the highest-value first move in the whole engagement. From there it becomes a channel decision: which SKUs you sell yourself, at what price, in what pack, and how the marketplace stays a discovery surface rather than quietly becoming your largest and least profitable customer.
