Why Milan brands come to us for this

  • Hreflang and canonical structure rebuilt across Italian, English and any German or French storefronts so your own pages stop competing
  • Collection architecture built for how the category is searched — material, room, finish, occasion — not for how the warehouse is organised
  • Provenance and production content that names Como finishing, Brianza cabinetry or a specific tannery, because vague Made in Italy claims rank against nothing
  • Shopify's default duplication fixed: product URLs, faceted filter parameters and pagination brought under control
  • GEO work that puts extractable dimensions, materials and comparisons on the page so answer engines can cite you

A Milan brand's organic problem is usually structural before it is editorial. The Italian site ranks reasonably for the brand name and almost nothing else, because collection pages were never built around how people actually search — by material, by room, by finish, by occasion — and the product pages are duplicated across two URL patterns the way Shopify does by default. Meanwhile the English pages exist, get indexed, and quietly compete with the Italian ones because hreflang was configured by an app that nobody has checked since installation.

The commercial opportunity sits in two very different places. Domestically you are competing with marketplaces and with retailers who stock you, which means the pages that win are the ones a marketplace cannot make: real material and production detail, care and dimension information, comparison content, and category pages written by someone who understands the product. Internationally the game changes to intent and language. A German buyer searching for Italian-made furniture or a French buyer searching for leather goods is a high-value query in a language your site probably handles worse than it thinks, and translated-by-plugin category copy does not rank against native competitors.

The newer layer is answer engines. A growing share of category research now happens inside a chat interface that summarises rather than lists, and what gets cited is content with specific, extractable facts: dimensions, materials, provenance, comparisons, clear pricing structure and a schema layer that says unambiguously what the product is. For a brand whose entire argument is that the thing is made in Lombardy by people who know how, that is an advantage — provided the facts are on the page in a form a machine can lift.

Made in Italy is a search asset only if the page proves it

Provenance is the most over-claimed and under-evidenced thing in Italian ecommerce copy, and both search engines and answer engines are increasingly good at telling the difference between a badge and a fact. The pages that earn international queries about Italian manufacturing are the ones that name the process, the place and the material: silk finished at Como, frames built in the Brianza belt around Cantù and Meda, a leather sourced from a tannery you can name, a production step described rather than gestured at. That content also does work you cannot buy any other way — it is what a journalist covering the Fuorisalone quotes, what a German retailer links to, and what a model cites when someone asks it which Italian brands make a particular kind of product. Add to that the seasonal reality that April and the two fashion weeks generate genuine search spikes and genuine link opportunities, and the sensible calendar writes itself: substantive category and provenance content published in the quiet months, ready and indexed before the attention arrives, rather than a press release published the week everyone is already at Rho Fiera.

Scoped and quoted for your Milan store

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Technical Audit

A full crawl plus log-file analysis to find what Googlebot actually sees and where crawl budget is being spent. Findings ranked by revenue impact.

02

Demand Mapping

Keyword research mapped to your catalogue and margin, not to search volume alone. High-volume terms you cannot profitably serve get cut.

03

Fix the Foundation

Technical remediation ships first. There is no point building content on a site that wastes half its crawl budget on filter URLs.

04

Build & Publish

Collection landing pages and commercial content shipped on a fixed monthly cadence, each with internal links planned before it goes live.

05

Measure & Iterate

Monthly reporting on non-branded organic revenue, index coverage and AI citations. Branded queries are excluded from every growth number we show you.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Outdoor & Sports Gear

~$7M/yr, 480 SKUs, US + EU via Shopify Markets · Shopify Plus (Shopify Markets, 3 regions)

Paid social carried 81% of revenue and CAC had climbed 44% in eighteen months. Organic sat at 2,100 sessions a month against category competitors doing ten times that, and the EU storefront duplicated the US catalogue with no hreflang at all. The named constraint: three national retailers own the head terms with link profiles this brand could not match in a year, so the plan had to win on query depth instead of authority.

+58% organic revenue YoY

“Honestly I signed for the SEO and the AI-search piece was a footnote in the proposal I skimmed. Then in March our product pages started getting quoted in ChatGPT answers for insulated growler queries, and that traffic showed up in GA4 with real purchase intent attached to it. Organic revenue is up 58% year over year and roughly a fifth of that comes from surfaces that didn't exist when we signed the contract. I still don't fully understand it. I've stopped questioning it.”

FAQ

eCommerce SEO in Milan — your questions

Subfolders on one domain are the right default for a brand of this size, because they concentrate authority instead of asking you to build it three times. Country domains make sense when you have genuinely separate operations, local teams and local link building, which most Milan SMBs do not. Shopify Markets supports both, so the decision is strategic rather than technical, and reversing it later is expensive.

We do the technical and structural work — architecture, hreflang, schema, internal linking, keyword and intent research — and the Italian copy is written by a native writer, either yours or one we work alongside. We will not pretend to draft Italian category copy ourselves, because search rewards writing that reads like a person and Italian buyers spot the difference immediately. What we do own is the brief: what the page must cover, in what order, and which queries it exists to win.

It helps if you prepared for it. The week generates search interest, press coverage and links, but those land on whatever is already published and indexed, not on a page you put live on the Monday. The practical approach is to publish collection and provenance content, press resources and a clear location and appointment page well before April, then use the fair to earn coverage that points at pages that already rank.

It changes who does the shortlisting. When a buyer asks a model which Italian brands make a particular kind of product, the answer is assembled from content that states facts plainly and can be attributed. Brands whose sites are mood boards with a hero video and three adjectives are invisible to that process. We restructure product and category content so the specifics — materials, dimensions, production location, care, differences between models — are on the page in extractable form, and we track which queries you appear in.

Technical fixes can move impressions inside four to six weeks. New collection pages and content typically need three to six months to rank on commercial terms. Nine months is a fair window to judge the programme on revenue. Anyone quoting thirty days is describing a fluke, not a plan.

Always. Branded queries grow when your paid media grows, so including them inflates SEO numbers for work SEO did not do. Every growth figure we report to you is non-branded, and we show the branded split separately so you can see both.

Generative engine optimisation is making your store citable by AI answer engines. It matters now for research-heavy categories where buyers ask an assistant before they search. The work overlaps heavily with good technical SEO: clean entities, correct schema, extractable answers and content worth citing.
