Marketplace Management in Boston, MA

Amazon is where a Boston brand gets found and where its margin gets quietly eaten — the two happen in the same account and have to be managed together.

Delivered remotely for brands across Boston and Massachusetts.

Why Boston brands come to us for this

  • Supplement compliance handled first — manufacturing and lab documentation, ingredient and claims review before listing
  • Amazon Business pricing and tax-exemption handling aligned with the Shopify B2B terms your institutional buyers already have
  • Subscription counts and bundles differentiated so the platform's own auto-replenish does not buy your repeat customer
  • Return rate modelled into per-unit contribution on apparel and footwear before any ad budget is committed
  • Inbound inventory planned against the late-August campus restock instead of chasing it once demand arrives

Supplements are the most contested category on Amazon and Greater Boston makes a lot of them. That has a specific consequence: this is not a channel you enter by uploading a spreadsheet. Dietary supplement listings sit behind documentation gates — manufacturing compliance paperwork, third-party lab testing from an accredited facility, ingredient and labelling review — and brands routinely find a listing suppressed weeks after launch because a document was never supplied or an on-pack claim did not survive review. We treat the paperwork as the first deliverable, not as an obstacle discovered later.

Once a listing can stay live, the economics decide everything. Subscription products behave differently on a marketplace than they do on your own store: the platform's own subscribe-and-save mechanics discount your margin while keeping the customer, and a 30-day supply that a shopper buys at a lower unit price on Amazon is a customer you have paid a referral fee to lose. So the catalogue is planned around it — different counts, different formats, different bundles — and advertising targets are set on contribution per unit after fees rather than on an ACoS figure that ignores them.

The rest is the part that separates this from a pure Amazon shop. We run the channel so it feeds the Shopify store: a package insert with a genuine reason to register the product, the Brand Registry follow-up tools the platform actually allows, and a first-90-day email sequence waiting for anyone who does come across. What we will not do is claim we can pull marketplace buyers into Klaviyo — the platform does not give you the email address and mining order reports to build a list breaks the terms you sell under.

Local context

Three Boston catalogues, three different marketplace answers

The categories this metro actually produces do not share a channel strategy. Wellness and supplements have the biggest marketplace demand and the tightest rules — compliance documentation, claims language that has to be written twice because what your product page says and what Amazon's reviewers accept are not the same standard, and unauthorised sellers who buy retail and undercut you. Lab, robotics and technical hardware go somewhere else entirely: Amazon Business is a real procurement channel for the departments, hospitals and research groups that surround Kendall Square, with quantity pricing and tax-exemption handling built for buyers who would otherwise raise a purchase order — which means the marketplace listing and your Shopify B2B path are serving the same institution through two doors, and the pricing has to agree. Seafood and perishable specialty food mostly stay off marketplaces altogether, because the fulfilment networks cannot take them and a platform's delivery promise is not one you can safely make on a two-day overnight product in February. Then the calendar: late August into September is the single heaviest marketplace-buying window in this metro, because a replenishing student population furnishes and restocks online rather than in a shop, and inventory for it has to be inbound weeks before the demand appears rather than reactively. New England heritage apparel and footwear can work well, but only once the return rate is priced into the model — apparel returns on a marketplace are high enough to turn a healthy-looking unit margin negative.

Full service detail
01

Catalogue & Listing Rebuild

Titles, bullets, backend search terms, variation parentage and category nodes rebuilt across Amazon Seller or Vendor Central, TikTok Shop and Walmart. Suppressions and stranded inventory fixed at the cause, not resubmitted.

02

Brand Registry, A+ & Brand Story

Brand Registry enrolment, A+ and Premium A+ modules, Brand Story and Storefront pages built to each platform's image and copy specs. Produced inside this service because the formats are fixed.

03

Sponsored Products, Brands & Display

Campaigns split by intent and margin band, converting search terms promoted to exact, negatives maintained weekly, and targets set from contribution margin instead of a category average.

04

Fulfilment & Fee Economics

FBA against FBM modelled per SKU on size tier, storage, return rate and reimbursement recovery. Some products should never enter a fulfilment centre, and we name which of yours.

05

TikTok Shop & Creator Seeding

Catalogue sync, listing compliance, sample seeding to affiliates, and live and video commerce, run as a mechanic of this channel rather than as a separate affiliate programme.

06

Channel Strategy & the Route Back

SKU allocation, MAP and pricing alignment, marketplace-only bundles and pack sizes, plus the permitted paths home: package inserts, Brand Registry tools and platform-allowed follow-up.

Scoped and quoted for your Boston store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Boston engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Account & Catalogue Audit

Listing quality, suppressions, buy-box history, variation structure, the fee and returns reports and ninety days of search terms. You get the findings whether you hire us or not.

02

Fix the Listings

Parentage, titles, backend terms, imagery and A+ rebuilt before any spend moves. Advertising a listing that converts badly buys traffic for whoever else is in the carousel.

03

Draw the Channel Lines

Which SKUs sell where, at what price, in what pack size, agreed with you in writing. The marketplace should not be bidding against your own store for the same order.

04

Advertise to Margin

Sponsored campaigns rebuilt by intent and margin band, with ACoS and TACoS targets derived from contribution per unit after referral, fulfilment and return costs.

05

Compound & Route Back

Weekly search-term mining, monthly fee and reimbursement review, and the insert and registry mechanics that give a marketplace buyer a reason to reorder on your site.

FAQ

Marketplace Channel in Boston — your questions

Documentation that proves the product is what the label says. That generally means manufacturing compliance paperwork from the facility that made it, testing results from an accredited third-party laboratory, and images of the actual packaging showing ingredients and directions. Claims are reviewed separately and more harshly than most brands expect — anything implying treatment or prevention of a condition will fail. We get the file assembled before launch, because a suppression six weeks in costs you the rank you paid to build.

Often yes, and for smaller orders they prefer it. Amazon Business supports quantity-tier pricing and tax-exempt purchasing for registered organisations, which suits the recurring low-value consumables that a lab or department would otherwise put through procurement for no good reason. The thing to get right is consistency: if your business pricing there undercuts the terms you have given the same institution on your own store, you will find your contracted accounts buying through the platform and paying you less.

If you sell anything a student sets up a room with, yes, and the deadline is earlier than instinct suggests. Demand builds through August and the units have to be received into the fulfilment network before that, which in practice means the decision is made in June. A listing created in the third week of August has no reviews, no rank and no history when the window is already open, so it spends the busiest fortnight of the year learning.

By monitoring the things that actually break rather than waiting for a weekly call. Suppressions, buy-box loss, stranded inventory and policy notifications are checked daily and dealt with the same day. We work from Albuquerque, our only office, so our clock runs two hours behind Boston — the practical effect is that something surfacing in your afternoon gets worked on rather than picked up the next morning. Nobody on this team is in Massachusetts and we do not pretend otherwise.

It can, and that is the failure mode we manage against rather than pretend away. Marketplaces are rented shelf space: the platform owns the shopper, sets the fees and can change both without asking. We use them for the thing they are genuinely good at, which is putting your product in front of people who have never heard of you, then arrange pack sizes, bundles and pricing so the reorder has a reason to happen on your own store.

Not directly, and treat anyone who promises it as a liability. Amazon does not give sellers the buyer's email address, and mining order reports to build a marketing list breaks their terms. The legitimate routes are package inserts offering registration, warranty or a refill incentive, Brand Registry tools such as Customer Engagement and Brand Tailored Promotions that reach your followers inside Amazon, and Buy with Prime on your own storefront where the economics hold. Slower, and it survives an audit.

Google and Meta buy traffic for a store you control. A marketplace is a sales channel with its own search engine, its own ad auction, its own fulfilment network and its own fee schedule. The reporting never reconciles with your Shopify numbers, the failure modes are suppression and buy-box loss rather than creative fatigue, and nothing means anything until the unit economics are modelled after fees.
