Shopify Plus & Headless Commerce in San Diego

Checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, B2B and Markets for San Diego brands that have outgrown what a theme can express.

Delivered remotely for brands across San Diego and California.

Scale · San Diego

Why San Diego brands come to us for this

  • Checkout UI extensions that explain subscription commitments before the customer commits
  • Shopify Functions for stack bundling and volume pricing without three overlapping discount apps
  • Shopify Markets with MXN pricing, Spanish storefront and landed-cost duties for cross-border orders
  • B2B company accounts and net terms for the coastal specialty and surf shop network
  • 3PL and ERP integration across Otay Mesa, Miramar and Sorrento Valley warehousing

The moment most San Diego brands genuinely need Plus is not a traffic milestone. It is the day the subscription programme gets complicated — a stack of four SKUs on different cadences, a prepaid six-month plan, a gift subscription, and a checkout that needs to explain all of it without a support ticket. Standard Shopify runs out of surface there, and no amount of app stacking fixes it cleanly.

The second trigger is the border. If you are manufacturing or assembling through the Otay Mesa corridor and selling into Mexico as well as the US, you need Shopify Markets configured properly — per-market catalogues, MXN pricing, Spanish storefront, duties and import tax shown at checkout rather than sprung on the buyer by the carrier. That is a Markets and Functions project, not a translation app.

We build both, plus the wholesale side that surf, beverage and supplement brands here almost always have running in parallel: company profiles for the specialty shops from Oceanside down to Imperial Beach, per-account price lists, net terms and a self-serve reorder portal on the same inventory as your DTC front end. Hydrogen we recommend rarely, and we will tell you when your Liquid theme already outperforms the headless build you were quoted.

Local context

Plus earns its fee here on subscriptions, wholesale and the border

San Diego's consumable-heavy brand base means checkout is where the money is decided. Post-purchase upsells on a supplement stack, a Function that applies volume pricing to a three-bottle bundle without a discount app, a checkout extension explaining what a subscription actually commits you to — those move AOV and month-two retention more than any homepage work. Then there is the cross-border reality: San Ysidro and Otay Mesa are the busiest land crossings on the continent, a large share of the local customer base is bilingual and shops in both currencies, and nearshore production in Tijuana means many brands here have supply chains that ignore the national border while their storefront pretends it exists. Markets closes that gap. B2B closes the other one, because the specialty retail network along the coast still writes real volume.

The same standard of work we run for every client — applied to a San Diego brand’s realities.

Full service detail
01

Checkout Extensibility Build

Checkout UI extensions for trust content, delivery choice, gifting and post-purchase upsell. Native, upgrade-safe, and no longer dependent on checkout.liquid.

02

Shopify Functions

Custom discount, delivery and payment-method logic written as Functions. Volume tiers, bundle pricing and B2B rules run server-side instead of via three stacked apps.

03

B2B on Shopify

Company profiles, price lists, payment terms, quantity rules and a self-serve reorder portal. Wholesale and DTC on one catalogue, one inventory, one admin.

04

Shopify Markets & Localisation

Multi-currency, multi-language, market-specific catalogues, domain routing and correct hreflang. Expansion without a store-per-country sprawl.

05

Headless Hydrogen Storefront

Hydrogen on Oxygen with the Storefront API, edge caching and streaming SSR. We build this only when the performance or content case is real, and we say so when it isn't.

06

ERP, PIM & 3PL Integration

NetSuite, Business Central, Akeneo or a 3PL wired in through a documented middleware layer with retry logic, error alerting and a reconciliation report.

Scoped and quoted for your San Diego store

We do not work off a rate card. Every San Diego engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Technical Discovery

We map your systems, order flows and edge cases end to end, then document where data breaks today. Output is an architecture diagram you can hand to any engineer.

02

Solution Design

Native-versus-custom decision for every requirement, with cost and maintenance load attached. Plenty of requests get answered with a $0 native setting.

03

Build in Sprints

Two-week sprints in a dev store with a staged demo at the end of each. You see working software every fortnight, not a status deck.

04

Load & Failure Testing

Peak-traffic simulation, payment-failure paths, partial-sync recovery and a rollback plan. We break it in staging so BFCM doesn't break it live.

05

Launch & Enablement

Phased rollout, monitoring dashboards and training for ops and finance. Every custom component ships with a README and a named owner.

Supplements (Subscription DTC)

~$4.2M/yr, 60% subscription revenue, 22 SKUs, US · Shopify Plus (Recharge, Klaviyo)

Monthly subscription churn hit 9.4% and the cancel flow was a single button on a hosted page nobody had touched in three years. Support processed 340 subscription changes a month by hand because customers could not do it themselves. The named constraint: no forced logins. The brand refused to gate account access behind a password reset, which ruled out every off-the-shelf portal.

Home Goods & Furniture

~$11M/yr, 2,300 SKUs, configurable upholstery, US · Shopify Plus + Hydrogen storefront (Oxygen)

Fabric, leg and size options turned 2,300 SKUs into more than 40,000 variant permutations, and the Liquid theme rendered a configurable PDP in 6.9 seconds on mobile. Collection filtering ran client-side, so 40% of shoppers left before the first product painted. The named constraint: the ERP stayed. It was the single source of truth for stock and lead times and was not up for replacement.

Clients on this work

Reorder time 20 min → 3 min

“We sell wholesale into about 400 accounts and were still taking reorders by email like it was 2009. They built the B2B catalog on Shopify with net-30 terms and per-account price lists, and moved our whole rep team onto it in one week. Average reorder went from roughly 20 minutes of back-and-forth to under three.”

LCP 4.1s → 1.3s

“A Hydrogen build plus a NetSuite sync that our own team had failed at twice. Inventory finally matches between the warehouse and the storefront, which sounds boring and is the most valuable thing anyone has done for us this year. LCP went from 4.1s to 1.3s. The honest part: the first six weeks felt slow and I genuinely wasn't sure we'd picked right — it only clicked once we moved to a standing Thursday call with the engineers instead of account-manager summaries.”

FAQ

Plus & Headless in San Diego — your questions

Almost certainly not. Shopify Markets gives you market-specific pricing in MXN, a Spanish storefront, local payment methods and duties collected at checkout, all from one admin and one inventory. Running a separate store per country doubles your merchandising work and splits your customer data, and the redirect and hreflang mess it creates is a genuine SEO liability.

Usually not, and San Diego brands ask us this more than most because the local engineering talent pool makes it sound easy to maintain. A well-built Liquid theme hits sub-2s LCP for a fraction of the cost. Hydrogen earns its keep when you need a heavy CMS content layer, a custom product configurator, or a front-end framework your in-house team will genuinely own. We will talk you out of it otherwise.

For most mid-market brands here, yes. Company profiles with multiple buyers, per-account price lists, case-pack and minimum quantity rules, net terms and self-serve reordering cover the majority of what a regional wholesale operation needs. Your reps stop rekeying emailed orders and the shop stops working off a stale PDF line sheet.

We scope it in phases and put a number against each phase before you commit, rather than publishing a range that never survives contact with your requirements. What actually moves it: B2B, subscriptions, ERP integration and whether you go headless. You can stop after any phase, and we model the Plus platform fee against what you would genuinely unlock before recommending the upgrade.

No. Shopify has retired it in favour of checkout extensibility, and anything still running on it is on borrowed time. We migrate custom checkout logic into checkout UI extensions and Functions, which survive platform upgrades instead of blocking them.

Through a documented middleware layer, never point-to-point. Every sync gets idempotency keys, retry with backoff, dead-letter handling and alerting into your Slack. You also get a daily reconciliation report so a silent failure cannot run for a week.

For checkout extensions, B2B and Functions at scale, yes. Markets and headless work on standard Shopify too. If you are weighing the upgrade, we will model the fee against what you would actually unlock rather than guess.
