eCommerce SEO & GEO in Zurich

Search work for Swiss stores competing in German against Germany, in French against France, and increasingly inside an AI answer instead of a results page.

Delivered remotely for brands across Zurich and Switzerland.

Grow · Zurich

Why Zurich brands come to us for this

  • hreflang built for de-CH, fr-CH and EU-facing storefronts, so Swiss and German pages stop competing with each other
  • Collection architecture targeting Swiss-specific intent: domestic delivery, provenance, servicing, local sizing conventions
  • Shopify duplicate-URL and faceted-navigation cleanup, done once across every language rather than per storefront
  • Product and Offer schema carrying per-market price and availability, so results match what the buyer will actually pay
  • Buying guides written per category season — alpine gear against the winter, gifting against Christmas and Easter

A Zurich brand publishing in German is not competing with other Swiss brands. It is competing with Germany, a market roughly ten times the size with ten times the content budget, for the same keywords. The naive response is to write more; the effective response is to be unmistakably the right result for a Swiss and Swiss-adjacent buyer. That means de-CH targeting done properly, prices and delivery promises visible in the markup, and collection pages that answer questions a German competitor cannot answer as well.

Underneath that sits the usual Shopify tax, which nobody warned you about. Products resolve at two URL patterns by default. Faceted navigation generates crawlable parameter combinations that multiply with every language. Collection pages ship with no copy and thin titles. Add three storefronts and the crawl waste compounds. We fix the platform-level problems first — canonicals, parameter handling, sitemap hygiene, robots rules — then build hreflang that actually reflects your market structure rather than the version a plugin generated.

The commercial content layer is where Swiss categories earn their rankings. Buying guides for alpine equipment written against season and use case, movement and servicing explainers for watches, ingredient and origin content for chocolate and skincare that can survive scrutiny in three languages. That same content is what gets you quoted inside an AI answer, which is increasingly where category research happens before anyone visits a store at all.

Winning in German without outspending Germany

Search intent splits along the border in ways that are easy to exploit. Swiss buyers search with Swiss vocabulary, expect prices in francs, care whether an item ships domestically or arrives with an import charge, and increasingly search for whether a product genuinely is made here. A German-market page ranking above you cannot serve any of that well. So we build collection and guide pages that own the Swiss-specific queries first — delivery, domestic availability, provenance, servicing in Switzerland, sizing conventions — and treat pure category head terms as a later, funded ambition rather than the opening move. In French the arithmetic repeats against France, with the added detail that Romandie search vocabulary and product naming do not always match Paris usage, so translated pages have to be reviewed by someone who sells here rather than run through a model and published. hreflang between de-CH, fr-CH and your EU-facing English or German pages is the mechanism that keeps those audiences apart, and it is the thing most often broken on the stores we audit.

Product Page Optimisation

Titles, descriptions, image alts, Product and Offer schema with live price and availability, plus review markup that stays valid as inventory changes.

04

Commercial Content Programme

Buying guides, comparisons and category explainers targeting mid-funnel demand, each linked into the collections they support. No filler blogging.

05

Entity and schema work, clean extractable answers, llms.txt and citation-worthy content so ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews reference your store.

06

Scoped and quoted for your Zurich store

We do not work off a rate card. Every Zurich engagement starts with a fixed statement of work — named deliverables, named dates, one number — written after we have looked at your store, not before. If a smaller first step would serve you better, we will say so.

How it runs

From kickoff to results

01

Technical Audit

A full crawl plus log-file analysis to find what Googlebot actually sees and where crawl budget is being spent. Findings ranked by revenue impact.

02

Demand Mapping

Keyword research mapped to your catalogue and margin, not to search volume alone. High-volume terms you cannot profitably serve get cut.

03

Fix the Foundation

Technical remediation ships first. There is no point building content on a site that wastes half its crawl budget on filter URLs.

04

Build & Publish

Collection landing pages and commercial content shipped on a fixed monthly cadence, each with internal links planned before it goes live.

05

Measure & Iterate

Monthly reporting on non-branded organic revenue, index coverage and AI citations. Branded queries are excluded from every growth number we show you.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Outdoor & Sports Gear

~$7M/yr, 480 SKUs, US + EU via Shopify Markets · Shopify Plus (Shopify Markets, 3 regions)

Paid social carried 81% of revenue and CAC had climbed 44% in eighteen months. Organic sat at 2,100 sessions a month against category competitors doing ten times that, and the EU storefront duplicated the US catalogue with no hreflang at all. The named constraint: three national retailers own the head terms with link profiles this brand could not match in a year, so the plan had to win on query depth instead of authority.

Clients on this work

+58% organic revenue YoY

“Honestly I signed for the SEO and the AI-search piece was a footnote in the proposal I skimmed. Then in March our product pages started getting quoted in ChatGPT answers for insulated growler queries, and that traffic showed up in GA4 with real purchase intent attached to it. Organic revenue is up 58% year over year and roughly a fifth of that comes from surfaces that didn't exist when we signed the contract. I still don't fully understand it. I've stopped questioning it.”

FAQ

eCommerce SEO in Zurich — your questions

Not with the same pages. Prices, delivery expectations and import treatment differ enough that one page cannot satisfy both, and Google will pick a winner you did not choose. The clean structure is market-specific German storefronts with correct hreflang, sharing product data but differing on price, shipping and trust content. It is more work up front and it stops your own pages cannibalising each other.

A .ch gives a clear geographic signal and reads as trustworthy to Swiss buyers, which matters. It also boxes you in if the plan is to sell across Europe, since a country domain is a weak signal for everywhere else. The usual answer for an exporting Zurich brand is a .com or brand domain with market subfolders and correct hreflang, with the .ch kept and redirected. If your .ch already carries years of equity, we model the trade-off before touching it.

It raises the value of being the clearly-stated authority on narrow, verifiable things. Assistants summarising a category will reach for content that makes precise claims cleanly — what a movement is, what a Swissness claim actually requires, how a fabric behaves at altitude. Structured, extractable answers in each language, plus entity and schema work, are what gets a store cited rather than paraphrased away.

We usually recommend waiting until analytics justify it. Ticino is a real market but a small one, and a third language triples review load on every content change forever. We monitor Italian-language search demand and Ticino sessions as part of reporting, and if the volume argues for it we scope Italian as a proper storefront rather than a machine-translated layer.

Technical fixes can move impressions inside four to six weeks. New collection pages and content typically need three to six months to rank on commercial terms. Nine months is a fair window to judge the programme on revenue. Anyone quoting thirty days is describing a fluke, not a plan.

Always. Branded queries grow when your paid media grows, so including them inflates SEO numbers for work SEO did not do. Every growth figure we report to you is non-branded, and we show the branded split separately so you can see both.

Generative engine optimisation is making your store citable by AI answer engines. It matters now for research-heavy categories where buyers ask an assistant before they search. The work overlaps heavily with good technical SEO: clean entities, correct schema, extractable answers and content worth citing.
