Shopify Agency for Toronto and the GTA

Most Toronto stores are really two stores wearing one theme: a Canadian one and an American one. We build the version that handles both without leaking margin at checkout.

Toronto is two hours ahead of our Albuquerque office, so a 9am call for you is 7am for us and the rest of your working day overlaps ours completely. In practice it means same-day answers, live calls whenever you want them, and no waiting overnight for a reply.

The market

What selling online in Toronto actually looks like

The GTA is the largest concentration of consumer-goods trade in Canada, and it is unusually vertically stacked. The old garment trade around Spadina and King West still supplies apparel labels that now sell direct. Import and wholesale businesses founded by first-generation families in Scarborough, North York and Markham are a genuine engine of the local product economy — a lot of Canadian DTC brands are the second generation of an importer, not a venture-funded startup. The Ontario Food Terminal in Etobicoke is the country's largest wholesale produce market, and the warehouse belt strung along the 401 through Mississauga and Brampton is where nearly every Canadian 3PL keeps its east-coast node.

Category-wise, Toronto punches hardest in beauty and skincare, jewellery and accessories, intimates and apparel, and cold-weather technical outerwear — the city produced several of the beauty and jewellery brands that gave Canadian DTC its international reputation. The common thread is that these are brands whose largest single market is the United States while their operations, staff and inventory sit in Ontario. That one fact drives most of the technical work: cross-border pricing, landed-cost transparency, US-facing customer service hours, and a shipping story that does not fall apart at the border.

Custom Shopify and Shopify Plus storefronts designed around your catalogue, built in clean Liquid, and launched with a measured conversion baseline.

Plus & Headless in Toronto

Plus-tier engineering for brands that have outgrown a standard theme: checkout extensions, Shopify Functions, B2B, Markets and headless Hydrogen storefronts.

Move to Shopify with your catalogue, customers, order history and organic traffic intact. Redirect parity is signed off before we touch DNS.

A continuous experimentation programme on your Shopify store: research, hypotheses, prioritised tests and every result reported in full, losers included.

Technical and content SEO built for Shopify catalogues, plus generative engine optimisation so your products surface inside AI answers.

Google Ads in Toronto

Google Ads for Shopify catalogues: Merchant Center feed health, Shopping and Performance Max structure, brand and non-brand separated, and weekly query mining.

Meta Ads in Toronto

Facebook and Instagram for Shopify brands: Advantage+ and catalogue campaigns, Conversions API signal repair, a creative cadence that outruns fatigue, and geo holdouts to check the claim.

Marketplace Channel in Toronto

Amazon, TikTok Shop and Walmart run as a discovery channel that feeds your Shopify store, with listings, PPC and margin managed together.

Klaviyo Email & SMS in Toronto

Klaviyo built as a retention system: behavioural flows, RFM segmentation, SMS used sparingly, and owned channels pushed toward 25-40% of total revenue.

Creative & Content in Toronto

Static, video and UGC creative produced on a monthly testing calendar, plus the product photography and page content your store and ads run on.

Analytics & Data in Toronto

GA4, server-side tracking, Conversions API and consent mode implemented properly, plus reporting that ties every channel back to contribution margin.

Apps & Support in Toronto

A named Shopify developer and strategist on a fixed sprint cadence: app stack owned, theme kept clean, ranked backlog shipped every month. The first stabilisation pass typically cancels around $1,840/mo of redundant app spend.

Verticals

Who we build for in Toronto

The categories that dominate Toronto’s commerce economy — and what each one needs from a Shopify build.

01

Beauty & skincare

Ingredient-led ranges need regimen bundling, refill subscriptions and INCI-accurate content — all standard Shopify app-stack work, and all localisable per market.

02

Jewellery & accessories

Made-to-order sizing, engraving and gifting windows need real variant and lead-time logic, plus fraud-safe checkout at higher AOVs.

03

Outerwear & cold-weather technical

A brutally short selling season means the storefront has to be tested and ready in August, not fixed in December.

04

Second-generation importers going direct

A wholesale catalogue is not a product catalogue. Shopify lets one business run B2B price lists and a DTC storefront off a single inventory source.

05

Food, snacks & functional CPG

Bilingual labelling, provincial shipping restrictions and perishability all need handling at the shipping-profile level, not in a policy page nobody reads.

Why us, here

What we do differently for Toronto brands

Two priced markets, not a currency converter

A live FX widget gives you ugly prices and no margin control. We set USD as its own market with its own price list, rounding and shipping rates, so the American buyer sees a store that looks built for them.

Landed cost at the border, shown at checkout

Cross-border parcels that arrive with a surprise bill get refused, and a refused parcel costs you twice. We configure duty and import tax collection so the customer sees the full number before they pay.

A French storefront that actually works

Navigation, filters, cart, checkout, transactional email and Klaviyo flows all have to follow the language switch. Translating the homepage and stopping there is how brands fail Quebec buyers and compliance at the same time.

Premium Skincare (DTC)

8-figure DTC brand, ~140 SKUs, US + CA · Shopify Plus (migrated from Magento 2)

Magento 2 cost $9k a month in hosting, extensions and emergency dev before a single feature shipped. Mobile LCP sat at 5.4 seconds and mobile converted at less than half the desktop rate across 68% of sessions. The named constraint: 11,412 indexed URLs and a top-3 organic position on their hero category, so a migration that lost rankings would cost more than the platform ever saved.

Performance Apparel (DTC)

~$6M/yr DTC, 900+ SKUs across size and colour variants, US · Shopify Plus

Returns ran at 31% and refund cost consumed the entire paid media margin. One size chart image served 40 different fits, and 62% of add-to-carts started on a collection page that never showed variant availability. The named constraint: no new product photography budget, so every fix had to come out of the existing asset library and the review corpus.

FAQ

Working with us from Toronto

No. ConversionEX is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we work with Toronto and GTA brands remotely. We do not rent a Bay Street mailbox to look local. We come up to start a project, and for planning sessions where being in the room changes the outcome.

Shopify can calculate all of it once your registrations are entered correctly, but it will not tell you which provinces you need to register in. That is a question for your accountant based on where your sales sit. Our job is making sure what you are registered for is what the checkout charges, because the common failure is a store quietly collecting the wrong rate for a year.

Almost never. Shopify Markets gives you US pricing, USD checkout, US-specific shipping rates and localised content on one store and one admin. Running two stores means two catalogues, two apps bills and two sets of inventory drift. The exception is a genuinely different assortment or brand name in each country.

You plan for it before it happens. That means at least one courier rate live in every shipping profile, a lightweight banner and email flow ready to explain delays, and a delivery-estimate block on the product page that reflects the carrier actually being used. Brands that only wire this up mid-disruption lose the peak weeks while they scramble.

Usually not until checkout customisation, B2B on Shopify, or transaction-fee maths make the case on their own. Plenty of Toronto brands doing several million a year run beautifully on standard Shopify with a well-built theme. We would rather put that money into cross-border configuration and retention, which pay back faster.
